Freedom Mobile’s Band 66 LTE has now rolled out to Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta, slightly ahead of the operator’s expected “summer time” due date.
Calgary’s new Freedom LTE access covers as far North as Sage Hill, as far West as Rocky Ridge, as far East as Chestermere and as far South as Seton. Meanwhile, the LTE network around Edmonton reaches as far North as St. Albert and Fort Saskatchewan, as far West as Glastonbury, as far East as Sherwood Park and as far South as Leduc.
This progress likely means that Ottawa, St. Catharines and Kitchener-Waterloo are next, as Brian O’Shaughnessy, Freedom’s executive vice-president of technology services, told MobileSyrup in a recent interview that those Ontario areas were set to go live in that same summer time-frame.
The rest of Ontario — London, Windsor, Kingston, Peterborough and Barrie — is likely to light up in late summer or in the fall, according to O’Shaughnessy.
Freedom first launched its LTE network in November 2016, utilizing the somewhat obscure AWS-3 Band 66 spectrum to secure 4G speeds. At launch, the carrier offered only one supported phone and one rate plan. Now, the carrier has four LTE data plans and seven LTE-ready handsets.
