As of December 1st, 2017, Canadian carrier can no longer charge customers a fee to unlock wireless devices. What used to cost $50 is now free and those who felt bound to a carrier due to their device being locked, can do so.
Time will tell in terms of how Canadian carriers will respond to this change, possibly shifting the marketing strategy from advertising the largest network or speed, to one that offers the best rate plan and customer service.
