In an announcement that could come as early as today, Amazon will announce a new Echo speaker that features a 7-inch touchscreen, according to The Wall Street Journal.
This is almost certainly the same ‘Knight’ speaker (pictured above) that leaked late last week courtesy of AFTV News and Evan Blass.
According to the WSJ, the speaker will cost $200 USD when Amazon starts selling it sometime next month. Additionally, a major focus of the device will be VoIP calling. Amazon reportedly plans to greatly enhance the voice calling functionality of all of its Echo speakers as part of its efforts to fend off new competitors like Microsoft.
The company will start by allowing Echo owners to call one another over the internet before implementing additional functionality in the future.
Knight will likely also borrow some functionality from Look, Amazon’s most recently announced addition to the Echo family. Like Look, Knight is expected to feature a front-facing camera that can take photos of its owner’s clothes and then provide outfit recommendations.
The WSJ does not mention if Amazon will make the new speaker available in additional markets outside of the U.S.
