Netflix has unveiled Squid Game: Unleashed, a new Android and iOS game based on its massively popular Squid Game drama series. We’ve heard for a while now that Netflix is working on a video game adaptation of Squid Game, but it’s only now that we’re finally seeing it. Like other Netflix Games, Squid Game: Unleashed will be offered at no additional cost to Netflix subscribers.
The first trailer for what Netflix is calling a “multiplayer battle royale game” was shown off during Gamescom Opening Night Live (ONL). While the Netflix series is known for its dark tone and heavy critiques of capitalism, Squid Game: Unleashed is a cartoonish party game. In it, you play as a contestant who has to survive various deadly games inspired by the show, including a buzzsaw-filled race track, molten lava and falling platforms.
“You win some, you die some. Use skill and quick reflexes to survive twisted competitions in this multiplayer action game inspired by the hit series,” writes Netflix in the game’s official description.
On the one hand, it looks like it could be a fun riff on party games like Mario Party and Fall Guys. But on the other, it’s ironic that Squid Game, of all things, continues to be milked by Netflix. But of course, this being the streamer’s biggest-ever series means it was bound to happen.
The trailer ends with a vague “soon” release window which, of course, could mean anything. However, one would think Netflix would aim to launch the game around the December 26th premiere of Squid Game Season 2. The company recently said it aims to increase the synergy between its game and streaming content releases.
