It seems that it might be incredibly easy to spoof Face Unlock on the OnePlus 6.
According to a May 29th, 2018 video and a series of comments posted to Twitter by user rikvduijn, Face Unlock can be easily fooled by both a colour and black and white photograph.
In the 16-second-long video posted to Twitter, an individual uses a photograph of rikvduijn to easily unlock the phone.

The OnePlus 5T was the first phone to feature Face Unlock, but Chinese hardware manufacturer OnePlus ported the face recognition software to its other smartphones, including the OnePlus 3, 3T, 5 and 6.
It’s important to note that unlike the iPhone X, the OnePlus 6 still has a fingerprint sensor that is much harder to spoof than Face Unlock.
“We designed Face Unlock around convenience, and while we took corresponding measures to optimize its security we always recommended you use a password/PIN/fingerprint for security,” said OnePlus, in an email statement to MobileSyrup.
“For this reason Face Unlock is not enabled for any secure apps such as banking or payments. We’re constantly working to improve all of our technology, including Face Unlock.”
As such, anyone concerned about their security should probably shy away from using face recognition to guard their devices.
It’s worth noting that Canada’s privacy infrastructure isn’t ready for biometric security.
