If you thought the OnePlus 3’s 6GB of RAM was overkill, Samsung has a treat for you. The company just announced a new 8GB LPDDR4 (that’s short for low power, double data 4 in something approaching English) DRAM package designed for integration with the next generation of smartphone and tablet devices.
Like the company’s new lineup of FinFET processors, this new RAM module is made using a 10nm manufacturing process. It also takes advantage of four 16 gigabit LPDDR4 memory chips. The end result is a stick of RAM that can transmit 34GBs of data per second.
Samsung says the new silicon will help upcoming mobile devices handle 4K UHD and VR, as well as potential dual camera setups, with ease. Samsung also says all that extra memory also won’t eat up a phone’s battery life. According to the company, its new 10nm 8GB RAM module uses the same amount of power as its previous 20nm 4GB module.
Unfortunately, the company doesn’t mention what device will be the first to take advantage of its new memory, though a good guess is probably the Galaxy S8.
