Now that the calendars have flipped over to 2015, the tech press has turned its attention to CES in Las Vegas. The show doesn’t start until next week but companies are already talking about the products they’ll be unveiling. Alcatel OneTouch is first out the gate with a smartwatch called the Alcatel OneTouch Watch.
The release doesn’t give too much away, in terms of hardware or software. Alcatel is presumably saving the details for next week. So far we know that it will be affordable (“a fraction of the cost of competitors”) and that it will look and feel like a traditional watch. In that sense, it looks like the metal version of the Moto 360.
Alcatel says the Onetouch Watch is “packed with sensors and apps” that allow users to track activities and connect the watch to their Android phone in order to control music, take photos and receive notifications. However, an Alcatel Onetouch rep has confirmed with us that this watch does not run Android Wear and instead will run on an RTOS or a real-time operating system.
This is similar to the Samsung Gear Fit, which connected to Samsung’s line of Galaxy smartphones but didn’t run Android Wear or Tizen. Samsung developed its own custom RTOS for the Fit.
Stay tuned for hands-on pictures and video next week!
