Samsung is even adding AI to its fridges now

Samsung is focusing on unifying the wrong parts of its ecosystem

Samsung is adding a new AI wallpaper generator to its Bespoke fridges, and I just can’t…

The service is limited by allowing each person to generate only five wallpapers daily. You can save some of your designs for later, but it feels strange to roll out this feature and limit it to only five attempts per day. I could see myself doing 10-20 generations when I set up a fridge to ensure the wallpaper matches my kitchen, but I would be surprised if most people wanted to generate AI fridge wallpapers every single day.

The other half of this AI update includes a new version of Bixby in some of Samsung’s new 2024 appliances. This new version can understand context and remember things to help make conversing with it more natural. You can even ask multi-stage queries like, “Hey Bixby, what’s the weather, and start my laundry,” and the assistant will be smart enough to do both things.

While this is all very cool, and I like the idea of all the devices in my home acting as digital assistants, I worry that Samsung’s products are too niche and most people in North America are just simply not going to use Bixby as their default digital assistant. Really, what we’re going to need is for appliances to be co-opted into the Matter standard at some point so you could use an LG washer/dryer and a Samsung oven, all with the Google Home app.

Right now, it seems like most of the devices that support these features are only available in the U.S. and South Korea, but I’d expect that as more and more capable Samsung appliances roll out over the next few years, these features may make their way to Canada.
