Samsung has revealed that Canadians who pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ between March 29th and April 20th will recieve a free new Gear VR with an included controller, along with their purchase of the company’s new flagship smartphone.
Samsung’s new Gear VR is set to retail for $129 USD (approximately $172 CAD) and will be available at Samsung Experience store locations and other retailers (Canadian pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet). In the U.S. the new Gear VR is set to release on April 21st but a Canadian release date unfortunately hasn’t been revealed yet, though we expect it to also release in Canada on the same date.
Oculus says that its Home platform has been rebuilt from the ground-up, reducing load times by three times. The platform also now includes avatars and a new web browser. Finally, the company says that 70 new Gear VR titles with controller support are coming to the Gear VR, with 20 launching in April and 50 more following in the next few months.
Samsung’s new Gear VR is designed to go head-to-head with Google’s Daydream platform and the View. Including a controller with the new Gear VR brings the headset up to par with Google’s virtual reality headset and also opens up a range of new gameplay options for developers.
