In a recent interview about distracted driving fines, Justice Minister Suzanne Anton said, “we are having a look at it in government and there may be some changes in the penalties, because we need people to get off their devices. When you are driving, you have to concentrate on the task at hand and that is driving.”
“There will likely be changes to the penalty structure, but those remained to be seen and announced,” said the Justice Minister.
The most recent account of distracted driving in the province occurred last week when a Victoria resident used her mobile device while driving and rear-ended a police car, which she later confirmed though a text to a friend.
“I just got into an accident, OMG. I was trying to txt u. Ran into a cop car. OMGGG,” read the text.
A recent survey by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) recently revealed distracted driving is responsible for approximately 28 percent of car crash fatalities in B.C.
