When the Galaxy A7 is announced, it will be Samsung’s slimmest phone ever. It’s part of the same family as the recently unveiled A3 and A5, though recent reports about this device’s passing through the FCC suggest that the A7 will make it to North America. Unfortunately, Samsung has yet to provide us with any official information about this phone.
According to SamMobile, the Galaxy A7 will boast a 5.5-inch 1080p display with Samsung’s octa-core Exynos 5433 under the hood. SamMobile’s sources say the A7 will also feature 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 13MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP camera up front, and a 1,600mAh battery.
This spec-sheet suggests a higher-end device than we previously thought. While some of the specs (like the RAM, storage, cameras, and display size) match up with what we heard last week, the 20nm Exynos 5433 is confusing. With its eight cores and Mali-T760 graphics, the Exynos currently only powers one Samsung phone: the Galaxy Note 4. No other Samsung device uses this relatively new chip.
Last we heard, the A7 would pack a Snapdragon 615. It’s not at all uncommon for Samsung to produce two versions of its phone for different markets, and usually this scenario manifests itself as separate Snapdragon and an Exynos models, but Samsung usually chooses chips of equal or comparable power. The difference between the 64-bit Snapdragon 615 and the Exynos 5344 is not insignificant.
With CES just around the corner, it’s possible Samsung is preparing for a big Las Vegas unveiling of the A7. With so many leaks, it’s hard to imagine the company holding off another three months until MWC in March. Fingers crossed we find out what’s going on with (and inside) the A7 in a few weeks’ time.
