The excellent OS X image editing suite, Pixelmator, has come to the iPad as a $4.99 standalone app.
Announced onstage at Apple’s iPad event last week, Pixelmator sports a number of touch-friendly editing features for existing content, and a host of brushes and erases, complete with capacitive stylus support, for painters and sketchers.
The app works with the OS X version using Handoff, so users can begin a project on one screen and resume it on another. While the app will work on previous iPads, Apple showed off Pixelmator as an example of an app that takes advantage of the iPad Air 2’s A8X chip, which features a three-core CPU and ultra-fast GPU.
Pixelmator for iPad was designed with iOS 8 in mind, using Extensions for image editing within the iOS Photos app, and iCloud Drive to store and restore projects.
With iPad sales sluggish for three quarters in a row, Apple needs exclusive software like Pixelmator to ensure that its tablet is perceived less as a consumption device and more a PC replacement, and increasingly as a superior choice to cheaper Android tablets.
