Sony will not release a Xperia Z6, according to comments made by one of the company’s employees.
In an interview with British tech website uSwitch, Jun Makino, a senior product manager at Sony Mobile, said, “I can’t comment on the future, but we will not be releasing a Z6.” He later added Sony is “turning to the next stage, with the Xperia X series.”
While Sony has yet to confirm the move, it makes a lot of sense.
The X Performance, announced alongside the Xperia X and Xperia XA this week at Mobile World Congress, is an improvement over the company’s current flagship. It includes Qualcomm’s latest SoC, the Snapdragon 820, and a better camera package, though it also switches out the Z5’s 2,900mAh battery for a decidedly smaller 2,700mAh power cell.
What this move doesn’t change — for the time being, anyway — is the company’s bizarre strategy of releasing a new flagship device about every six months. It was only back in November that the Z5 arrived in Canada.
