In a move meant to consolidate the more profitable side of its various gaming divisions, Sony has merged its PlayStation brand into a new company called Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE).
On April 1st, Sony Computer Entertainment’s current president and CEO Andrew House, will become the leader of the new division. Its new head office will be located in San Mateo, California.
SIE combines Sony’s hardware and software units, some stemming from the now-defunct Sony Computer Entertainment, as well as PlayStation Network services run by Sony Network Entertainment International, into one business located in the United States. The company says that local divisions of the company will be present in both Tokyo and London.
“By integrating the strengths of PlayStation’s hardware, software, content and network operations, SIE will become an even stronger entity, with a clear objective to further accelerate the growth of the PlayStation business,” writes House in a statement sent to MobileSyrup. “Along with our business partners, SIE will develop pioneering services and products that will continue to inspire consumers’ imaginations and lead the market. We will work hard to maximize corporate value by coordinating global business operations across San Mateo, Tokyo, and London by leveraging local expertise.”
Interestingly, Sony also says U.S.-based SIE will be in charge of the research and development required to create future PlayStation software and hardware.
Shuhei Yoshida, prolific Twitter user and president of Sony’s worldwide studios, says that his position hasn’t changed under Sony’s new corporate structure, though, he now reports directly to Shawn Layden, the president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA).
@sheer_sagacity no, I’ll report to Shawn.
