Samsung moving to adopt Google Messages on older phones

It looks like Google is going to be the main Android chat app moving forward

Earlier this year, Samsung decided to ship its phones with only the Google Messages app and not the familiar Samsung app people were used to. In the long term, this is a good move since it lets Samsung free up some of its dev resources and rely on Google to do the heavy lifting with things like RCS support.

In Canada, new Samsung phones come with the Google Messages app, but Samsung seems to keep prompting people with older phones to switch to the Google app.

Some users on Reddit are complaining that switching to the Samsung app is annoying and makes the chat app very laggy, but other have clarified that after a bit the Google app loads all your messages and starts reacting quickly again.

Overall, it’s probably for the best that there’s one primary chat app on Android for most people, so hopefully, Samsung can align all its phones and other smart devices, like its watches, with both apps.

You can still download and use the Samsung Messages app if you want, but I suspect the writing is now on the wall for it not receiving many updates moving forward.
