Sonim’s first ultra-rugged Android handset is debuting on Bell and TELUS

Sonim will debut its first smartphone, the ultra-rugged XP7, in Canada this month.

Coming to Bell and TELUS on October 20th, the Sonim XP7 “goes far beyond basic MIL-Spec and IP certifications,” (shots fired, Galaxy S5 Active!), featuring a glove-friendly screen, ultra-loud speaker, waterproofing up to 2 metres for 90 minutes, dust and shock proofing, oil slick protection, and more.

At its core, though — buried under the layers of reinforced plastic and rubber gaskets — is an Android smartphone, the first from the US-based company. With a 4-inch 800×480 pixel display, a 1.4Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 400 SoC, 1GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, an 8MP camera and LTE connectivity running on Android 4.4.2 KitKat, the XP7 promises to perform every smartphone-related task imaginable, but can also withstanding being run over by a truck without taking damage.

Pricing isn’t confirmed at this point, but the device will work with Bell’s and TELUS’s push-to-talk services, and will be sold through the companies’ business channels.

Also debuting on TELUS in November is the Android-powered XP6, which features a “numeric keypad in addition to a touch screen providing the best choice for workers familiar with Private Mobile Radio (PMR) devices.” We don’t know much about this one, but we’re looking into it.
