Upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge update bringing better manual controls

Galaxy S6

The fight for the best smartphone camera is a back and forth battle that has been going on for years. Companies like Samsung and Apple add megapixels, lenses and more and more advanced software to their phones, ensuring users can take great pictures in a snap.

Samsung has taken another step forward, closing the gap in at least one area. Android Authority has an early build of Android 5.1 for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge which contains new manual exposure controls that came to the platform in Google’s Camera2 API. This will allow you to select a point to focus on in the viewfinder, and manually adjust the exposure level of the camera before you take a photo. This should be particularly helpful when users want to take pictures in variable lighting conditions, and can be a picture-saver when you need it.

The update also includes support for capturing RAW images, as well as manual shutter speed control. These are features you’d typically find in a DSLR, not a smartphone, so S6 users will definitely feel pretty good about their smartphone choice, although it’s likely the smartphone camera battle will never really end. The update is currently expected to start making its way to users’ phones in June, so there isn’t much longer to wait now.
