Samsung hasn’t blessed the Windows Phone ecosystem with a new device since December 2012 when it introduced the Galaxy S3-derived ATIV S.
Now, over a year later, the company looks ready to launch a new 5-inch Windows Phone device, likely to coincide with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8.1 unveiling in April. The model, SM-W750V, has been kicking around in one form or another for a few weeks now, but a UAProf from Samsung’s own site — often an indicator of upcoming devices — reinforces the fact that it’s a Windows Phone-based product.
The leak points to a 1920×1080 pixel display, support for which was included in Microsoft’s GDR3 release late last year, along with Internet Explorer as default web browser. All signs point to a processor upgrade, too: expect a quad-core Snapdragon 800 SoC with at least 2GB of RAM.
While Nokia is still the de facto Windows Phone OEM, with over 95% of the world’s market share, Samsung has never officially given up on the ecosystem. It lacks the first-party app support that Nokia is famous for, but Samsung has released numerous software and app updates for its various Windows Phone devices over the past year.
Let’s hope that the SM-W750V is a sign of things to come, as Microsoft needs a high-profile company like Samsung to help it gain market share in key markets like North America.
