Update: Nokia says fix incoming for purple hue issue on Lumia 900 display

The Nokia Lumia 900 is a great phone but suffers from a few lingering software bugs. One such issue is a prominent purple tingle to lighter-hued colours like white and grey. Usually this occurs at random when automatic brightness is turned on, but can be faithfully reproduced by manually changing brightness to low.

Nokia’s US Twitter account responded to a question about the issue with, “We have identified the issue and will be addressed through a future software update.” The problem is likely due to poor AMOLED calibration out of the factory, as it doesn’t seem to affect every handset, but the majority of owners we polled had seen the issue at low- to mid-brightness.

Update: We’ve received a response from Nokia Canada:

Yes, we have been made aware of an issue creating a pinkish tint to the display on some Nokia Lumia 900 units. This is a result of a complex interaction between the device’s advanced software and chipset. We have identified and are currently working on a software update that will fix the issue for a future update.

In the meantime, affected customers can address the situation by going to “settings” and then “brightness” on their device. Once there, users should turn “automatically adjust” to “off” and set the level to “medium.” This will restore the colour to normal tones.

There you have it: for now, turn off automatic brightness. A software update is coming soon.
