Samsung is used to making various electronics components for all kinds of computing products, from laptops, to televisions, to all manner of smart and dumb-phones. So it’s no surprise that the company wants to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to the Internet of Things (IoT). In case you’re unaware, the IoT is the latest movement in technology infrastructure, aiming to put a computer chip in everything from your lightbulb to your socks.
In a press release on May 12, Samsung announced the platform it has been teasing to connect a huge range of devices to the internet. Included in the preliminary release is a family of three processors, called ARTIK 1, 5, and 10 respectively. These range from a 12 mm x 12 mm module with Bluetooth LE that is specifically designed for small, low-power devices, to an 8-core micro-PC with 1080p video support and 2 GB of RAM onboard, designed for media and industrial applications.
Young Sohn, president and chief strategy officer of Samsung Electronics said of the company’s new platform: “We are providing the industry’s most advanced, open and secure platform for developing IoT products. By leveraging Samsung’s high-volume manufacturing, advanced silicon process and packaging technologies, and extensive ecosystem, ARTIK allows developers to rapidly turn great ideas into market leading IoT products and applications.”
Some of the specific goals of the open platform announcement include optimized power usage for mobile devices with limited energy output, a focus on security when communicating with the cloud, and considerations of size to be suitable to applications where typical microprocessors are simply too big and heavy.
