RIM CEO: “We fully intend to lead the full QWERTY segment with BlackBerry 10″ (Audio)

RIM’s quarterly results were somewhat expected today, but unfortunatley they were still shocking to read and hear. Low smartphone and tablet sales led to low revenues of $2.8 billion, down an unbelievable 33% from the previous quarter. Again, expected as RIM hasn’t released a flagship device in a year.

“I’m absolutely confident that BlackBerry 10 will prove itself as a platform.”

These are the words that Thorsten Heins, RIM’s CEO, stated on his first day on the job. Over the past few months RIM has teased the masses with a glimpse of how BlackBerry 10 will operate, confidently showing off the keyboard, notifications and even seeding 5,000 Alpha devices to developers. However, the “latter part of 2012″ release for BlackBerry 10 is not happening. RIM dropped a bomb on all of us by communicating that coding has been an issue, noting “the platform has proven to be more time consuming than anticipated” and is “now scheduled for Q1 of calendar 2013.”

During the conference call Heins said “I want to be clear that these issues are not related to the quality or functionality of the features in the software. But rather to the time required to manage the integration of such a large volume of incoming code and to prepare it for commercial use globally… RIM’s development team are relentlessly focussed on ensuring the quality and reliability of this platform. I will not deliver a product to the market that is not ready to meet the needs of our customers…there will be no compromise on this issue.”

Unfortunately in the meantime RIM will miss the busy back-to-school and holiday push and will continue to promote devices that run BlackBerry 7. Heins said that carriers actually prefer to have a BB10 Q1 launch, saying that many of the global LTE networks will be in place by this time. So the good news is that RIM is planning to have a BlackBerry 10 LTE-enabled device. As for other BB10 device insights, he said the “focus of the initial BlackBerry 10 launch is primarily on the premium smartphone segment, in both touch and full QWERTY. To be clear, we fully intend to lead the full QWERTY segment with BlackBerry 10 and expect the BlackBerry 10 QWERTY version to launch in close proximity to the initial full touch BlackBerry smartphone.”

So now we wait it out. Only another 6 or more months to go…

    • Poor Heins, he inherited the “buzz Talk” from Lazaridis and Ballsilies.

Having said that:” My total understanding of his sayings goes forward in accordance to the capability of my understanding to read etweend the lines of his message; And I encourage that without leaving a stone unturned, until “coming up this summer” or “arriving in September” before “coming by February” upon the arrival of “latter next year” but not after “end of Q1 2013″ just to say ” I’m sorry”

    • There are no “Good news” comig from Heins, and it’s not only 6 months!
-Who releases a new phone in January after everybody spent all their money in Dec??

-With RIMM stock in the mid $7 by tomorrow and low $7 by mid week and maybe even high $6 by July 10th ( Annual Shareholders meeting) plus another Q report that reflects SGS3 release, plus another Q report that reflects Back to school and the release of iphone 4 plus another Q report that reflects the Holidays sales ( or lack thereoff) how exactly do you think:
-RIM will be above $2 in December
-RIM will have enough money to make phones??

RIM is dead, and the only reason its not bought tomorrow is that firing the rest of the 11,500 employees AND pay $4B its too much, they will wait till until RIM implodes and they just end up buying the network and patents divisions, which are the only parts of RIM that make $.

I’m tempted to buy RIMM just to FIRE LAZARIDIS, and get him out of the lounge room and get his face out of the donut box!

  5. By this time iOS 7 features will be leaking, same with Key Lime Pie speculations for I/o and WP8 will be coning off their launch strong. There is no room in this for a BB10 experience as no one will be caring about it

He’s right, they would run a greater risk if they pushed out a half-a$$ product now, than to wait 6 months.

    • Agreed, Look at the Playbook. They rushed that and things were missing so people got mad. Then when they release the OS2 update people still go mad because BBM wasn’t on it.

They are not Apple or Android of Windows. They’re in the spot light all the time now.

Rather have a complete product later than a quarter to half-a*s product now.

Get it right and people will trickle back.

But man that SGIII is looking good right now.

  7. Very disapointing news from RIM today. They even managed to upset their loyal fans with this delay. I myself was a fan until after the bad news, looks like my upgrade this fall wont be a blackberry afterall..

  8. That’s huge to miss to the Holiday season, especially with the prospect of new iOS, Android, and WP8 devices on the way hitting in the fall. I was actually hoping to see them all hit around the same time. I can’t blame them for wanting to work on the polish (the Playbook should have taught them that) but damn. It’s only going to get worse as the real talented people move on if they feel there is no future at RIM.

  9. In other news, RIM announced it has made a push to be the leading force in the “land-line, dumbphone and long distance” segment with BlackBerry and will compete intensely with telcos of the late 90s.

  10. This is sad news, I love this company but for some reason they keep disappointing me. I am currently using a 9900 for work and an international galaxy s3 as personal device. Was looking forward to be able to have 1 device that fits them all with bb10. The 9900 feels quite old right now. I understand they want to release a solid working product, but by then I think it would be to late.

    • Considering they’ve increased their cash and continue to sell BB7 phones, yeah I’d say they’ll be o.k.
It’s just hard for consumers to wait for BB10, but when it comes out they will buy it because it will be new and shiny. People are fickle.

    • Seriously: another supporter of RIM bacause they have 77 million users and $B2.2B cash??

-Remember that these are numbers from Q1 2012 people!!
-It’s pretty obvious that 77mill and $2.2B are the highest numbers for users and cash for RIM
-firing 5,000 employees will cost them $1B, even if they save $1B in the long run (there is no long run for RIM)
-Did you notice that they have kept writing off inventory every Q?)
-the rest of the cash will not last more than 3Q; end of the year.
-January 2013 after Spain, Greece, Ireland rescus; the olympics, US elections do ou thing anybody will lend them $$?
-RIM will cease to exist as we know it in 3 Qs at the most.

  13. Hold off and release a better product? Release something incomplete early hoping it might capture interest? I think either way RIM is screwed. They’ve waited too long, and no matter how they play their cards, it’s too great a challenge for them to take on Google and very promising Microsoft products. At best, I can see them becoming the standard ‘dumbphone’ that replaces old school flip phones… because RIM seems to be doing well with consumer adults who buy them for their kids and/or themselves just cause they’re affordable.

  16. Its always devastating when there are ongoing layoffs and I feel for those other 5000 ppl. Its obviously a necessary evil if a company is to survive. If Rim is relegated to a niche market due to their streamlining and continuing issues with their product, that’s fine by me. I will still buy their blackberries. There’s still a large enough loyal fan base and enterprise users THAT WILL STILL USE RIM PRODUCTS and sustain the company. If they need to delay so they can come out with a more polished product I can wait. I refuse to assiocatae to a generation that constantly needs instand gratification with an attention span of a 10 yrs old.

Its soo easy to criticize any company when u don’t have a hand in its daily operations, but only simply a user. Despite Rim’s issues I’m still confident in this company. It seems today tech users have developed the stupidity of mob mentality. Ppl today seem to think these companies owe them simply cus they use their products. Been long time in this industry and very happy to use their devices; and I have used them all.

  17. RIM is finished right from the start of BB STORM and is headed to a downfall ever since then because they keep making physical keyboard devices instead of touchscreen devices like Iphone or Android phones does. I believe that RIM is headed the wrong path right now.

    their mistakes

    1) memory is too low
    2) processor is too low.
    3) boring physical keyboard and hardware
    4) should not buy QNX software in the first place till they get to have memory increase to 1 or 2 GB RAM and processor to 1.3 GHZ or higher then QNX will run snoothly.

    5) they should released QNX platform smartphone last year around same time as playbook.

The way I see it now, with all thses criticism towards Rim, I think they are on the right path. I’m convinced Rim does have something solid to give to its user base, they just need time to execute it. I have been to dfferent parts of the world and I have never seen anyone other them US dumping on Rim this much. Microsoft screwedup royally with their surface tablet and their phones have never hit any form of critical mass acceptance and they are continually forgiven, and why is that. How many products have Microsoft flopped in the last five yrs alone? And they are still continually forgiven. I don’t get.

So Rim, F#*!?! the others. Do what you have to do to make qnx work. Cus despite the others they are still those who will always use yur devices and you don’t owe us anything.

    Peace

  21. If an anecdote is reflective of the bigger picture, I have been a blackberry user since 2001. My 32gig sg3 is in transit and ill be done with rim (sadly). Just need to find a buyer for my 9900 7and 64gb playbook.

Sadly for rim, they just don’t seem to be able to regain lost ground. They rested bfar too long on their success and really failed at ongoing innovation.

Sorry for the typos I’m tying this on my playbook and the keyboard sucks.

  22. I don’t RIM to go anywhere. As a canadian I want the last great Canadian tech company to thrive and succeed. But they won’t and can’t unless they figure out how to get BB10 and the new hardware out for this year, September if possible. They won’t die right away, it will be a slow wimpering death, exactly like Palm and webOS. It doesn’t matter what great things you have planned if you can’t bring it to market before people go elsewhere.
