Sony’s 5-inch 1080p “Yuga” smartphone smiles for the camera running Jelly Bean

There have been numerous leaks of Sony’s upcoming quad-core, 1080p “Yuga”, but this is the first time we’ve seen it clearly and running shipping software.

German Android site Android Schweiz posted up-close photos of Sony’s 5-inch device, which promises to catapult the company back into the realm of competitiveness. The device appears to be running Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, but is likely to launch with Android 4.2. The phone continues the trend of using on-screen navigation buttons from the Xperia T, but appears more boxy and less distinctive than the upcoming 4.6-inch “Bond Phone“. Sony, like Samsung before it, could be dressing up the Yuga in clothes unbecoming of a shipped device, but we’d venture to say this is a latter-stage prototype.

Its internals read like the recently-announced HTC Butterfly J: a 5-inch 1920×1080 display, 2GB RAM, a quad-core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, a 12MP camera and a non-removable battery. In terms of design flare, the Yuga is expected to be Sony’s first phone with a glass back, and that chrome power button the right side looks fantastic.

Considering the Xperia T has yet to launch in most markets, we wouldn’t expect the Yuga, model number C660X, to launch until at least early January. The company announced the Xperia ion at the Las Vegas conference earlier this year, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they do the same with this one. Let’s just hope, for Sony’s sake, it doesn’t delay the launch for six months afterwards.

What do you think of the Yuga? Will this be your next phone?

Right. Apple will make a 5″ screened iPhone, then remarket their 3.5″ screened one as an iPhone Mini..just you wait and see.

  • Ron Mexico

Sony will ship it in 6 months when hardware is a generation behind as they always do.

This would be an almost perfect Nexus phone.

I’ll get the Nexus 4 for now, but if this comes out and the dev community is thriving, I will not hesitate to pick this thing up.

  • shawing

With non-removable battery, anything lower than 3000 mAH battery is a fail.

@Daniel: When you wrote “and that chrome power button the right side looks fantastic”, did you mean “HORRIBLE”? Because that’s how I see it from here.

Can’t wait to see that screen, but Sony always had bad design in my opinion. Let’s put a big chrome button on a side of a all-black phone. The next version will have strips too because strips make it go faster.

what’s that new trend with 5 inch screens? It’s way too big.

    • captain67

Agreed. You can blame Samsung for this one. Everybody wants their own version of the Note now, after seeing its commercial success.

  • Pahech

    I always liked Sony’s designs.

If they can get the software side ironed out, I don’t see why they can’t be as successful as Samsung.

“German Android site Android Schweiz…” by that you mean Swiss Android site, do you?

Sony is always too late to bring new phones to market. By late Jan/early Feb, Galaxy S4 spec will already be out and should be released in Apr/May. If I’m going to buy a new phone at that time I really would just wait for the Galaxy S4 which will have full implementation of A15 dual cores and gives the Snapdragon S4 Pro (quad core A15-esque) a run of its money, not to mention T604 just kick the butt out of Adreno 320.
