BlackBerry PlayBook updated to version 2.1.0.1088

The BlackBerry PlayBook hasn’t gotten a lot of love in the media lately. With the Surface and various iPads being released, it’s sometimes hard to remember that RIM has a tablet in play, and is still receiving updates. Earlier this month it got a sizeable upgrade to version 2.1, and now the company has released its first patch.

While there’s no changelog, the version 2.1.0.1088 is 79MB, so there must be a bunch of changes to the OS, even if they’re just bug fixes. If you are a PlayBook user, get updating; if you haven’t used yours in a while, dust off that screen, you’ve got some reacquainting to do!

    what a playbook?

    • R.Dot

The BlackBerry PlayBook is the best bang for buck tablet on the market right now. At $99 for a dual-core processor, 1GB of ram, 2 1080p HD cameras and a fast browser with flash support, it’s a steal. With a BB10 update when it comes out, it’ll make it an even better deal!

      PS. You’re an i***t.

    • greg

My playbook is basically useless other than for emails and some very basic websurfing. It only has a few useful apps. Good luck if you want to find any free apps for the BB playbook platform. The couple news apps are all Canadian. Can’t get the apps for NY Times, Washingtonpost, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, etc., or any mainstream US news apps. It does not support too many languages like ipad or android. The language choices are just too limited; there are probably more people using Chinese than French in the U.S. market. BB/playbook is made for the Canadian market and they just don’t understand what the rest of the world need. Fire the RIM management!

    what is a playbook?*

  • BlackBerry Gangster

    It’s a Blackberry tablet

    • OnTheSurface

-Its a tablet Released in April 2011, that STILL can’t do BBM without a Blackberry.

-Its a tablet in Halloween costume (Walking dead, get it?)

-Its the $99 video player/ book reader

-Its the Flop that keeps on going!

-Its the punchbag of all tablet-jokes!
Why did the Playbook crossed the road?-
Because it needed to get a Blackberry to send a BBM!!

  • HighClassFrenchCricket

i have a 9300 and its the best phone in the world, i use it to send my girlfriend little messages in the day teehee

    • phreezerburn

…and she answer during recess. Your parents must be so proud.

  • Blackberry Gangsta

The blackberry is the OG of the 7 inch slabs, all you other bums have copied it. Once again the blackberry proves it is the true trend setter and butt slapped.

  • sp

have to say that this tablet is still by far the best ive used.

it is easy to use. great OS and great build quality.

does everything I need it to do.

i still believe those who are bashing this tablet has never used it and are just being ignorant to the fact that this tablet kicks butt.

I too think the PlayBook is great, like it way better than my wife’s iPad. It is what it is and works great. I wish bb would put out a 5.5 version phone bb10, similar to Samsung galaxy note 2, that would take off!

  • Blackberry Playboy

i am INTERNATIONAL PLAYBOY using blackberry

  • BoXX

It truly is a great device. It’s a shame it gets bashed by everyone. I own two of them.

    • phreezerburn

Mine is full of PDFs accompanied by hours of video relating to the PLCs that I work on and all residing in an Otterbox Defender. It has lasted in the salt 1,300 meters down where everything outside of Toughbooks fear to tread.

  • Matt

Woohoo! I love updates! Seriously, I do. It’s awesome RIM has never stopped supporting the PlayBook.

    • OnTheSurface

RIM is not “Supporting” the Playbook; its simply trying to FINISH IT!

Playbook: the tablet in development….since April 2011!

    • 2dfx

      @OnTheSurface are you legitimately stupid?

So everytime a cookie-cutter Android device receives an update “oh that’s fine it’s bugfixes” but when the PB receives a constant stream of feature ads and enhancements it’s “in development”? You’re a joke.

iOS 6.0.1 must mean it’s still in development too eh?

  • ile2010

The Playbook is a beautiful, yet useless device. I picked one up for cheap but got rid of it immediately.

As a web surfing device, it’s excellent. The screen is great and it’s very responsive. It’s also quite capable as a media player, but the lack of Netflix is a big letdown. Installing Android apps is possible, but hardly a painless experience. It’s just not worth the hassle.

The biggest fail that I’ve come accross re. the Playbook was when I recorded a 5 minute 720p video on my Android device at my friend’s house and my friend wanted me to send him the video. Since the video was ~300MB, e-mail was out of the question. Tried bluetooth, but it turns out that the Playbook cannot receive files via BT. Was this designed by Apple?

It’s hard to bash the Playbook at its current price point as it is well made and the software is promising, but we can’t forget its release price. And let’s not forget the LTE version – hardly worth it, especially when you can use your mobile as a hotspot (whether you have an iPhone, BB, WP, Android , or Symbian).

I want to like this tablet. It’s well made and has a beautiful design in my opinion (rivalled only by the Surface, and this is well after the Playbook release). But why is it that my long-orphaned Nokia N9 would let me do so much more than the Playbook, considering that the PB is STILL supported by RIM?

    • OnTheSurface

Want to send him the file?
Just give your friend the tablet, ask her/him to take you out for lunch a couple of times and you will be even!

    • greg

I agree. The tablet looks good but that is all that is. It doesn’t have much apps available for BB, and some others cost money even they are free under other platforms such as ipad and android. My BB is useless.

    • Joe Public

Just send it over wifi if you goto file share in options it has a on off switch for wifi file transfer. You can send files from anywhere as long both are connected to the internet. I send all large files like movies,TV series, music etc over wifi to my playbook why waste ones time messing around with slow a*s Bluetooth what is this 2004.

I was in Indonesia working last year so the gf had to pvr the stanley cup playoffs all 7 games and the news on the riots then sent all of them to my playbook over wifi to Indonesia from canada. The more I use this little tablet more features pop out that I wasn’t told about and for 150 now its a steal.

      1 Ipad2 32g

Unlike Apple, the PB actually has a file system you can EASILY mount to your PC. If you did 3 minutes worth of reading you would have it set up and you can sync or copy files over wifi. As for accessing it from your Samsung – ya its RIM’s fault that they didn’t build in a mechanism to communicate with Android/Samsung………or is it Android/Samsung’s shortcoming for not providing a mechanism to sync to a PB. Seriously – its neither. Do some reading and youll probably come to the conclusion none of the vendors make it easy to transfer to another vendors technology. Your pc needs to sit in the middle or…….Oh Ya! have you heard about that new fancy thing called cloud storage?

  • dbott67

You can also use Dropbox for those not on the same wifi network… it’s free and in the app store.

  • Hooligan

Love my pb its a great little machine,it obviously caught apples eye if they coppied with the mini ipad.

  • ile2010

Keeping up the RIM fanboyism rampant, I see.

    1. I didn’t say that my phone was a Samsung. It isn’t. I have no allegiance to any manyfacturer, let alone Samsung,

    2. I don’t care if the PB can sync via WiFi. My phone can’t. BT is the standard, even if it’s slower.

    3. I don’t want to put everything into a cloud. Some of us care about personal data.

    4. Yes it is RIM’s fault that the PB won’t accept the file. Android has the market share, not RIM. My old Symbian smartphones made it easy to transfer files. Android makes it easy to transfer files. Feature phones make it easy to transfer files.

    5. Don’t bring Apple into this. Just because they choose not to include basic features doesn’t mean that it’s ok. It doesn’t seem to be hurting Apple. Last I checked, RIM wasn’t doing too well.

Lewis, why are you so touchy about the PB? Did you buy it at the release price?

  • shaun lee

    after nexus 7 8g drop to 159…

I guess playbook 16g may drop to 59…

  • BoXX

Dukto is the best app for moving files from one platform to another (BlackBerry, Android, PC). Works through WiFi. Excludes iSheep of course. Who wants to trade files with them. :)

  • AwesomeP

I’ve actually been using mine as my main computer ever since my motherboard fried during the summer. I’ve fallen in love with the thing. I am really starting to consider a bb10 phone.

  • Wc

Managing 6 blackberry enterprise servers, 180 blackberries, 20 iphones, 15 ipads, own 2 iphones, 2 blackberries, 2 playbooks, playbook has excellent quality, best value, email king, period.

  • Dillion

I am getting frustrated. Two updates ago really slowed my internet, and this one yesterday did nothing to improve the long lag at the end of the loading. So frustrating. And a few of my apps aren’t working. CrackBerry tells me I am not alone.

More happily my Surface should arrive next week.

    Bleah bleah bleah:

    “PlayBook is the best ever”

“PlayBook sucks in every way, nothing whatsoever is ever good about it”

    “You suck!”

    “You suck more”

General synthesis of comments whenever a story is posted.

did upgrade and dont see difference

  • Alan

I want to like the play book, it has a great screen, the build quality is excellent, but the app world is very lacking in apps. Now with all the excitements surrounding Windows 8 and the new iPads, I don’t know if the play book can compete.

  • Dillion

A lot of people seem very unhappy I am having a negative experience LOL

  • Vipin sequeira

The playbook is the most robust and dependant tab available in the market backed by the most reliable company. It is simply capable to every task and i picked it up the day it was launched it has never crashed nor given me any kind of trouble. The blackberry bridge is nothing less than an invention saving me all the money i would have spent on getting additional sim and data plans. Its the most beautiful device. And like someone said above most of the guys bashing the playbook must have hardly used it to give any serious opinion

  • Francois Sabourin

I do also love my Playbook, the harware and software are great. The problem is the apps, we are still waiting for Netflix and Skype. I already ordered Surface, for the moment it has not many applications but will have Netflix and Skype on day one and web surfing should be great. I will use my Playbook for tasks that is better done with a small size tablet (like reading books).

  • M.Y.L

Why is the installation of os 2.1.0.1088 so slow on my blackberry playbook it has stopped at %85 after 30th day’s why.

  • Rob M

i havta agree that I’ve had ipad and switched to the sleeker more manageable bb so for all those whining about Apple being better well put it in your hands and compare the difference bb has emerged knocked out on this one sorry
