It looks increasingly likely that Ice Cream Sandwich will be the end of the road for the various 2011 Xperia devices from Sony. These include the Xperia ray, arc, arc s, mini pro and others, all based on the 1-1.4Ghz Snapdragon S2 MSM8255 SoC.
Sony was previously cautious about advising its user to upgrade from Gingerbread to ICS on those devices, as the single-core processor and 512MB RAM pushed was a bit too limited for optimal ICS operation. Nevertheless, the company worked diligently to bring it to the now-legacy devices and they’ve rolled out slowly to users worldwide.
Considering the Rogers Xperia arc and arc s have yet to be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich in Canada, we shouldn’t put the cart before the horse. The Xperia ray has been updated, but that leaves many other, even newer products, still to go. The Xperia S, Xperia ion and Xperia U, all 2012 devices, are stuck on Gingerbread for now waiting for OEM and carrier approval.
What do you think of the 2011 Xperias not receiving Jelly Bean? Does it matter to you as long as they get Ice Cream Sandwich?
