Samsung earns record $7.4 billion profit in Q3 2012 on strong Galaxy sales

Samsung has scored another win with the announcement of its Q3 results. The Korean company earned a record $7.4 billion USD profit. This was on revenue of around $47.5 billion, a huge number in itself. Apple, in comparison, earned $8.2 billion on $36 billion revenue.

The company is estimated to have shipped an incredible 58 million smartphones, the most ever seen in a single quarter. Compared to Apple, which sold 26.9 million iPhones, Samsung is certainly winning the sheer numbers game. Keep in mind that the Galaxy S III has been out in parts of the world since May, while the iPhone 5 debuted in late September, only 9 days before the close of Apple’s Q4 tally. Approximately 20 million Galaxy S IIIs were sold in Q3.

Samsung’s mobile division contributed to a sizeable portion of the company’s revenue, adding nearly $24 billion in sales alone. During the company’s Note II launch last night, they said that nearly one in four Samsung employees works in research and development, and they are committed to innovation in the smartphone game. This was a direct push back against Apple’s claims of patent and trade dress infringement.

Samsung’s good fortunes are expected to slow somewhat in the coming quarters as increased competition and fewer blockbuster product launches lead to a slight sales glut. While the Galaxy Note II is expected to pick up some of the slack, it admits that competition from other LTE handsets is going to lower profit margins going forward.

    Wooooo!!!! Way to go Samsung!

    • OnTheSurface

Samsung sold 20 million units of the S3 in Q3 while RIM sold 7.7 of all their models in the same period of time.

Now that’s a slap for the RIM, the #3 seller of phones in Q3!

If Samsung drops the price of the S3 to $500 they could be selling another 20 Millionin Q4!

    Keep going strong Samsung! :)

Sorry, Fruit – your reign is over.

Apple feels the pinch. That lawsuit was a desperation move. Not only did it make Apple look even worse, but they’ve lost Samsung as their business partner.

IPhone5 was a joke, and IPads are just a while bunch of the same old last generation technology at over-inflated prices.

Bottom line: Samsung is making the right moves, while Apple seems to be somewhat disoriented, and getting wrose.

Even the sheep are waking up… and that says a lot!

    Very impressive

samsung are kings. they just are rocking out beautiful phones , keep it up and they can double. makes people think twice before buying apple now :)

    • Shamu

I agree. The products are good however their people are even better. They are just good and fun to work with and throw great parties. The GS3 party with Telus was the best ever. The poutine truck outside is what we all need after a great party. Hey Sammy, still waiting for my Psy ticket PLEEEEASE

  • TP

I am a Samsung fan myself and the numbers are impressive, but I do not want them to dominate the smartphone world. I hope other big players like Motorola, HTC, LG, RIM, and Nokia catch up soon..

    • Kristen

I agree. I own the GS2 and plan on upgrading to the Note 2, but a variety of competition is always a great thing!

  • Chew

^TP is onto something. Extreme dominance by any one player is never a good thing. I’d rather the platform-agnostic Samsung dominate over the closed-system Apple, but RIM remaining strong and Nokia resurging would be good news for consumers and competition.

I have been a loyal fan of the iPhone for many years. As soon as the iPhone was announced I ordered mine online and received it on day one. I will admit I was overjoyed but it faded pretty quickly.

I returned it after a week. I noticed how they had added little to no new content. I feel like Apple will be going downhill from here. It was huge mistake not investing in new innovative idea’s.

Cant wait to get my Galaxy Note II in 3 days !!!!

    Hubba Hubba!

  • Dylan K

TP is right, dominance is essentially a form of Monopoly, and that does nobody any good. Cmon RIM, wow us with BB10.

With that being said, Samsung is doing amazingly, and I hope they continue to do so in promoting Android and the top dog in mobile OSes.

As an Android fan, I never owned a Samsung phone. Disliked the built quality on their phones, but there’s no denying Samsung is king at the moment. I would prefer if other OEMs would take a cue from Sammy’s strategy and approach markets with no exclusivity, with expandable memory, removable (or at least RAZR maxx style) battery.

I’m currently at my 3rd HTC phone. Can’t really complain of my phones, but each one had lacks. If the next one doesn’t blow me away, I’ll jump boat – be it a Nexus, maybe Sony, but still no LG as I don’t trust them jus yet.

I’m also hoping that RIM will make it till Q1 2013 and have a successful BB10 launch. Nokia should be very careful with the launch of the Lumia. Sure the phone is great, but exclusivity, high prices are certainly some detractors to potential buyers.

With Sammy’s dominance in Android, Apple’s fading influence, RIM still going down, there’s desire for more competition. Be it from Nokia or others, we, the consumers, need it.

As much as I dislike Apple, I do hope they’ll start innovating soon, if only to provide some incentive for others to do the same.

Yet when Apple makes even more money and sells even more of its flagship phone somehow it’s a “disappointment” and the company “is doomed”.

Right. There’s no bias at all in here.

Can’t wait till i am the new owner of Samsung galaxy note 2

  • EndOfApple

Apple is done for, iSheeps are going to the slaughter house! The fusion dance of iSheeps to the PSY – GANGNAM STYLE!!!!

Only Samsung can innovate, if Apple doesn’t make their iOS a open-end system, they are f**ked. JailBreak frees the iSheeps of Apple’s closed control system.

Look at the Android Open-Ended Systems, it gives flexibility to design what you want, and not like limited with what apple tell you what you can do!!! F U apple!!!!

Everyone who owns an Apple Product, should simply walk into Apple Store, and return their iCrap products, and put your money back in your Bank, then you can justify using 1/2 of what Apple charges on Samsung Products.

I forsee Apple Stock crashing ~$700 ==> $100.00 minus a pennie!!!! Everybody who was a Apple stock, sell it, sell it all!!

    Destruction to Apple Is Coming!!!

You must be the biggest moron with that stupid dribble. Are you 12 years old or what?

  • Sub-Joker

I think google made a good choice letting LG make the new Nexus phone. this will (hopefully) push LG into becoming a serious contender in the smartphone business.

I one player game is not something I hope for. Although I like samsung and HTC products the most when it comes to android. I really would like to see other makers like LG, Sony and Motorola push it in the smartphone business as well.

  • Shamu

Okay Sammy. Don’t turn into Apple now. Keep your foot on the gas. Bring in Note2, lower GS3 to $99 and introduce GS3 quad core next quarter. Don’t let Apple breathe.

  • Basementandroiduserloser

    Baaaaaaaaah samsheep baaaaaaaaah

  • Wind the crap

I totally love this phoen BUT since I bouth it from wind it has no warranty from Samsung. I have problems with it on the 3rd day I had it, touchscreen, well wind would not replace it so I when I called samsung they said there warranty was from wind and not them. I went into the store where I got it from and was told that is just the way it is.. I returned the phone, and left.. I have one from Bell now, for far less and I was shocked that I have coverage everywhere.. that will teach me to stick with a Canadian company and not russian/egyptian one.

  • Mer

WOW that is IMPRESSIVE on Samsung’s part. It’s funny how Samsung shipped more phones while Apple made more profit -coughoverpricedproductscough- I also don’t want to see any one company dominate – where’s the Sony Xperia love? HTC love? Anyone feeling sad that HTC is quietly dying?
