HTC unofficially responds to being roped into the Apple “Antennagate” debacle

Apple stated on Friday that the iPhone 4 is not the only device that gets hit with a weak signal strength. Steve Jobs specifically targeted his closest competitors into his presentation: Samsung, RIM and HTC. We’ve already heard back from RIM by them stating that “Apple’s attempt to draw RIM into Apple’s self-made debacle is unacceptable.”

How about HTC. Jobs singled out the Droid Eris and said that their testing revealed the device completely lost signal by showing no bars. Although there’s no official statement HTC yet, head of Global PR Eric Lin said that “Approximately .016% of customers” of customer who have the Eris have complained about poor signal strength.

I’m sure we’ll be hearing official statements from both HTC and Samsung. They’re not one’s to sit still when a competitor knocks their products.

  2. Steve Jobs just made it much, much worse. Now not only do you have websites and magazines knocking the iPhone 4 signal but also all of their competitors aswell.

  3. Another reason not to buy an Apple product…you know you have a bad product when you can’t find a solution for your issues but instead point fingers at other manufacturers.

  6. The problem I had with the testing they did is that they used a strangle hold on all of the phones, where on the iPhone all that is needed is to bridge the connection on the lower left of the phone. To make this a fair and accurate test, Attenuation should have been achieved using a single finger on each phone, not the death grip apple used. Also of note, who hold their phone the way apple demonstrated the attenuation problem. Not I, not my coworkers, not the general public. Apples test was biased and pretty and just goes to show people with buy anything with that logo on it, even if it is rotten to the core.

  7. I think it is hilarious that these people complain about Apple on every comment thread, yet they are following Apple news religiously! Jealousy perhaps? Microsuck is garbage and there are no other serious competitors. If you can forgive Microsoft for windows 95, windows 98, windows xp, windows vista, windows 7, Office, Zune, and windows mobile then I guess we can cut apple some slack for one minor mistake they are trying to fix. I mean, after all…the fix for windows xp was windows Vista!

  8. All these companies defending themselves are so retarded. Apple wasn’t shitting on their phones, they were just pointing out a weak spot which is common on most smartphones. That’s why I have to give respect to HTC here, they are the only company to reply to Apple with a subtle, cold hard fact and nothing hateful, just as Apple did for themselves. Very good.

If only Nokia and RIM were that humble.

What do I need to forgive Microsoft for? Your basically saying that everything M$ has ever made has turned out to be a failure, much like Apple’s iPhone 4, thus far.

The point is, your just a pissed off fanboy cause your phone of choice is getting ridiculed for a faulty design and Apple is not taking blame for it, and as such, is pointing the finger at other companies smartphones. At least M$ admits when they screw up (ie. Windows Vista, Xbox 360). But for you to say that Windows XP and 7, M$ Office and Windows Mobile are screw-ups, that just proves my point of you being a fanboy.

Apple F***ed up and are not being responsible and people are getting fed up with their BS and it showed at their press thing in the 16th.

  10. Although I feel that it was somewhat low for Jobs to point out the faults of others when his Iphone is under scrutiny, I find that it was needed. I own a bold 9700 and have noticed that the signal strength often fluctuates when I’m in the exact same place. I have witnessed my phone go from full signal strength to no signal and drop the call. I also notice that this gets progressively worse as the phone gets older. It rarely happened when the phone was new. I find myself waiting for my device to go from x (no signal) to a few bars and I’m generally in the same place.
I don’t know if anyone else has this problem but it’s good that apple will find a fix for it once and for all. Here’s hoping!!

  11. For those that are defending the iPhone 4 with such a die-hard attitude, stop being so blind in your commitment to just one brand! Honestly… brand loyalty can be commended to a certain point, but after that, you’re just being an absolute i***t to ignore blatant flaws in a product.

The major issue here isn’t one of apple products suck and *place company name here*’s product kicks a*s, it’s one of the fact that Apple seriously f****d up and refuse to admit that they turned out a faulty product. What’s happening now with all the media attention is the result of the blind arrogance that Steve Jobs seems to possess.

So if I was a big apple fanboy f****t but justified it by saying that you are an even bigger apple fanboy f****t how would you respond to that? Not nicely.

  13. Looks like not many people noticed that RIM and Nokia did not challenge the FACTS.

These “problems” which are blown out of proportion, affect everyone in the industry. I just tested the HTC Touch and it goes from two bars to zero when I hold it in my left hand. Strangely it does not happen with my right hand.

  15. I admit I agreed with RIM because they were in wireless business longer than apple. many says they don’t have any antenna problems with bold 9700 so far, I have bold 9700 too and does not have any so far too. I believe that what Steve Jobs says were going too far, because he have not check the facts first with bold 9700 users first.

I believe any future apple products will produce more problems like security and software. apple have to learn to zip their mouth and no need to overstep others about their products.
