Consumer Reports: “iPhone 4 is still not one of our Recommended models”

It’s been a long time since Apple has felt this kind of pressure. They are used to everyone getting excited to use their products not nervous. The PR storm started right after the new iPhone 4 was launched where customers were getting a weak signal strength. Apple dodged the issue for weeks… then Consumer Reports said they could not recommend it and all broke out. That could have been the tipping point, a well known publication boldly stating that the product has an issue (Ironically the iPhone 4 is on their highest rated list too).

Friday we saw Apple CEO Steve Jobs announce that “a very small number of users” are having this antenna issue but they’ll be giving everyone who bought the iPhone 4 a free case (only until September 30th). Plus give if owners choose to return their iPhone 4, Apple will also give a full refund. Even though Apple has been “working our butts off so we can come up with real solutions”, Consumer Reports wrote on their blog that:

“Consumer Reports believes Apple’s offer of free cases is a good first step. However, Apple has indicated that this is not a long-term solution, it has guaranteed the offer only through September 30th, and has not extended it unequivocally to customers who bought cases from third-party vendors. We look forward to a long-term fix from Apple. As things currently stand, the iPhone 4 is still not one of our Recommended models.”
