Sony clears up Canadian Xperia Z availability (it’s probably not coming)

During a Twitter Q&A yesterday, Sharath Muddaiah, Marketing Manager for the Xperia line, tweeted that both the Sony Xperia Z and ZL will be coming to our fair country, but gave no details as to when, on what carriers, or why.

This goes against initial claims that just the ZL would be released in Canada, so we reached out to Sony for clarification. Apparently Muddaiah was “quite excited” about the handsets and was mistaken in his knowledge of Canadian availability. Sony says that nothing has changed at this point; the Xperia ZL, with LTE support and a beautiful 5-inch 1080p display, will come to multiple carriers, though when and which ones will remain a mystery for a little bit longer.

In an email to us Sony Canada said “Everyone is really excited about the week we’ve had at CES. A global representative made an error regarding Canadian product availability. At this time we can confirm that Canadians will be receiving the Xperia ZL as previously announced, but we have nothing to announce about the Xperia Z availability in Canada at this time. We will share more news on future products as they are confirmed.”

You can check out our hands-on with the Xperia ZL from CES 2013 if you haven’t seen it already. We also compare the two devices.

How does “probably” clear up anything? I thought it was clear that the Z wasn’t coming?

If anything, Sony did the opposite of clear things up.

    • takethemnow

you missed your meds this morning.

  • Darth Paton

Why did Sony do this? Why did it bother putting in any time or resources to produce a slightly different variation of its flagship? What is the business thinking behind such a move? I wanted the glass backed Xperia Z, not some watered down copy. And they wonder why they are struggling…

    • JPTN

How is it a “watered down” copy? The CPU, GPU, RAM, cameras, and screen are IDENTICAL. The ZL also has the least amount of bezel on any phone (over 75% screen), has a physical camera button, universal infrared remote, AND larger battery.

All in exchange for a slight bump in thickness (but still shorter and less wide design), no tempered glass, and loss of IP rating.

At the moment, I’m torn between them… the ZL also has the nice horizontal notification light near the bottom reminiscent of the Xperia S but the Z is just so sleek…

Also, what took so long Daniel… :p I was following the chat last night and tweeted this at you at 9:23am EST!

    • Doug Page

As nice as having a IR Blaster is I would much rather have the waterproof & dust proof Xperia Z. I understand the whole LTE & carrier specific operating bands but it wouldn’t have killed Sony to waterproof the ZL as they did the Z.

  • Gman

the SonyXperia canada guy tweeted that Z is also coming, which it turns out to be not the case.

  • Blackberry Gangster

I don’t know whose worst. ZTE Girl or Sony guy lol

  • Mike

    Shame on Sony

  • Al

the xperia Z won’t work in some Canadian locations but it will work in Europe and Asia.

  • hurric

these bitches better make Z available in Canada.

  • roman

Sony has been half-assing it for more than a decade now.

  • Ken

Who give a rats a-s Canada gets really nothing in the way of great smartphones. The companies I think only play to the largest markets. To much control here in Canada of cell phone business. I think I’ll go back to smoke signals. LOL

  • DC

I am offended. I have decided I will not buy any electronics from Sony since their quality declines and also has poor updates. But I think this xperia Z will be my mind changer. Now I have to go back to where I decided before. Sony you really sucks on different levels!

  • Tomatoes11

The Xperia Z is nicer. I might consider importing if it means that I am one of the only people in my city with one. Sounds good to me provided at least one of the LTE bands work in Canada.

  • Anthony E.

When I saw the promo video for these two phones I was like, OMG Sony finally did it right!! And, now I realize it was a false alarm.

  • David

I want the Z compatible with Telus, otherwise I won’t buy it.

  • Ron-C

Canada rarely gets any international devices anyways, and even when we did get them, they were usually only on one carrier and more than that locked to that carrier. Maybe if our market was bigger or there being no device locks where our updates have to be approved by the carriers. Heck, even our frequencies are different from a large part of the world. No one really wants to make all this special stuff for a tiny population that won’t really boost their sales.

  • thisguy

who really cares about sony anyways, good like getting android 5 in the next year anyways.

  • Terry

No body buy Sony cellphone in Canada anyway

  • CRTC

See, the problem now is when these are being sold in retail stores all the dumb sales people who know nothing about what they are selling will go “yaa this is also the phone thats waterproof” and the customer goes home to test it and dunks it in the tub and fries his phone in the process.

  • Dylan.D

Really is a shame.. the ZL is just any other android phone. The Z looked like a real beauty, something to stand out a little bit, unlike the ZL.

Would consider a upgrade for the Z, but I would never go with the ZL, too many phones look similar, not unique and stylish enough for my liking.

  • GlassBackBadIdea

Sony sucks. don’t buy their phones.

  • Ken

i currently use the galaxy rugby because i need a phone that is waterproof for outdoor activities. i was so excited to see the Z because finally we get a decent enough phone that is waterproof. damn you sony for bringing us a water-downed ZL instead.

  • johnson ng

so they make an amazing looking smart phone, and decides to launch the not as handsome version for Canadians…
and they wonder why Samsung is leading…

i was actually excited about switching out of samsungs…
    Give us the Z!

  • canada

So people in Canada dont want contracts but they blame Sony for not selling the Xperia Z with 3 year contract to Canadians. Just order it from eBay its not that hard !!!!!

    • tomatoes11

It’s pricier ordering it online. Besides, it might not have compatible LTE bands unless it officially comes here.

  • Miknitro

Nice, but not nice enough to have to import one.
    Sony Canada fail.

  • babablacksheep

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

That’s what you Fandroids get for being such sheep, and listening to everything somebody on a random twitter account says.

    Carry on sheep, baaaaa baaaaaaaaaa

    • cdub

wtf are you talking about? go smoke sum more crack..

  • seroevo

I picked up the T back in November and love it, but Sony’s marketing is as confusing as an anything.

When you’re already fighting an uphill battle against Samsung and Apple, your products should be just as accessible.

Instead, with the Xperia T, there was no info to be found between August and November, the Canadian launch was only announced 1-2 weeks ahead of time, I couldn’t find a demo in any Rogers/Bell stores (ended up finding one at Superstore of all places).

Don’t make your products hard to find or hard to buy. Don’t hide in the dark. Seems they’re doing it again with the Z.

  • Jay

    No Xperia Z?
    Goddammit Sony is worthless.
This is coming from ME who actually imported the Xperia S unlocked for $700 since Sony didn’t want to bring it to Canada either.
If they don’t release the Z I’m switching to Samsung. The Galaxy SIV will be much better anyway.
I wonder if Sony realizes how stupid they are?

  • alin

They’re not called slony for no reason. Terribly slow OS updates

  • Joe

no Z in canada? looks like Sony wont get my $$$$, ZL is one ugly phone..Z is sexy as hell. I already put $700 aside to but it the second it got here…looks like I will be getting GS4 now instead.

Not too bright to sell the only the Ugly one here, at leas give us a choice.

  • KT

Just buy the Z online — IDOTS!

the 3G version of Z will work on any netowrk.
the 4G version will work on only 2600mhz LTE in Canada.

Get it? Or go back to your Samsung Galaxy :)

    • Superstition

I’m not particularly knowledgeable about cellphones, but don’t most 3g networks in Canada run off the 2100 band? It’s also the one the Z is missing.

As for the LTE, I thought it was only the LTE that would work on any network?

Just trying to get some clarification because I am thinking of buying it online.

  • robbers

That’s the new trend. Compagnies teasing canadian consumers with their best phone models but not releasing them here. Like Nokia won’t release any colors, Sony won’t release their best looking phone.

    • babablacksheep

That’s robbers fault for not releasing more colors, but Nokia is partially at fault for not pushing Robbers harder to stock more colors. Truthfully though, all colors except the black, white and red are still hard to get for the 920

  • captain67

Flagship Sony phones usually show up with Rogers. The Z will likely follow that trend.

  • tony

i will personally need the z for times i masturbate in the washroom..the waterproof ability will save my phone if dropped in the toilet

  • ash

Also looking for clarification as to the frequencies/bands required for the Z to work here. I really want to pick up the Z if nothing else catches my eye at next month’s MWC.

According to the white papers, the LTE version of the Z (C6603) works with LTE band 7, but has no AWS. Is both necessary? Otherwise, it’s falling back on HSPA+ 850, or GSM 850/1900?

The HSPA+ version (C6602) supports all of the listed Rogers frequencies, so it shouldn’t have any problem here? Other than it not having LTE? Or is there something that I’m missing that would make either version not work in Canada?

We don’t even have LTE here in Manitoba (yet). I’d really like to know if the LTE version won’t work at all (when we do get it), because if so I’ll probably just go for the HSPA+.

  • Mikayla White

Wandering around the galaxy by yourself can be a difficult thing to do. But don’t worry, we’re here to guide you.

  • T.L

Seriously if the Z is not coming and is unavailable in Canada that is a huge disappointment…

I am if not one of Sony’s biggest supporters and to only have the ZL aka second class phone released here is complete non-sense.

SONY MOBILE CANADA – get your act together seriously!

    • iCrap

Yeah if Rogers does not get Z, I will be pissed off like hell. Not only me. Nobody wants a rubber s**t with some silly flap at the bottom. I swear to god I will ditch all my sony products and go apple / samsung if there is no Z in Canada. Sony treats NA customers like s**t. We never get top of the line TVs or home theater products, and if we do, they some kind of castrated model with features absent but the price is higher than in the EU. F**k it. If there is no Z in Canada – that will be the last spit in the face from Sony.
