Mobilicity goes live with its 21Mbps network, 20GB premium monthly data plans

Mobilicity, as expected, has gone live with its “4G” network, promising speeds of 21Mbps on compatible devices. The carrier, which is present in major markets such as Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa, is advertising its network as “unlimited”, adding two premium data plans to its offerings.

The details of the massive carrier upgrade were reported last week, and it turns out that the details were true. Mobilicity is adding a $20/20GB Premium Data Add-on for users to add to any existing plan. Then there’s a $50 Premium Mobile Data Internet Plan to be combined with the new $79.99 Huawei E366 Data Stick, which supports the new HSPA+ signal. The carrier has also dropped the price of its Basic Mobile Data Internet Plan, which provides up to 6GB at regular speeds, to $35/month.

Currently all of Mobilicity’s base plans have been discounted to $30/month, so adding the $20 Premium Data Add-on gives you unlimited North American talk, global text and 60 minutes of American roaming calling per month, plus 20GB of data. Without the data add-on, you’ll be throttled after 6GB.

Check out all the new plans at Mobilicity.

  • Is this Bb10?

I’ll believe it when I see it.

  • kettal

I think it’s time for T-Mobile to buy Mobilicity and make the first North America wide provider.

  • Ben

    Thank You Mobilicity!! :)

  • Brobilicity

Oh, so that’s why my SMS has been intermittent and data speeds have been inconsistent all day?

    Who’da thought?

  • Amir

But what about people who have 25$ plan? :\

  • mike

its definitely not going to be 21 mbps. specially when thy throttle there data and lots of data ports are closed and not usuable. when i tried Mobilicity i was always frustrated how slow their data was and how YouTube would constantly buffer and buffer. i switched to koodo which has real 4g speeds and never throttle there data and everything works flawlessly. and was always frustrated how small mobilicity coverage areas in the Ottawa zone. how pitiful it was lol.

  • CD

So far none of my tests are over 2 mbs. Speed seems similar to yesterday or last month or last year. Even 2 mbs is good enogh for normal use. I am not expecting lte speeds for $25.

    • OGOD

Did u add $20 for the data?

    • Martin

That’s because only people on the Premium data will get the premium speeds, everyone else is capped at about 2mbit/sec.

Hooray for network upgrades that only benefit those who pay more.

  • mjolnir

Well I dont know, I tested speeds the entire day, running speedtest.net app every 2 hours since 10am. I see no difference compared to before…

  • LazerAndroid

I am so happy and exhilarated right now, to the point that there are tears in my eyes! Mobilicity, you are AMAZING! From price, to plans, to phones, to coverage, to customer service – the whole package, you have it all!

For a loyal customer like myself, these are great news! I only wish I had a Panache to REALLY take advantage of your services, Mobilicity. Please, please, can I have a Panache? I really want it! Please? How long do you want me to beg? It’s been well over a year!

Either way, I can not express how satisfied I am with Mobilicity! :D

    Love,
    LazerAndroid

This fake LA profile wasn’t funny to start with, now it’s just tedious.

    • Geo

phoned 5 stores 2 said all existing customers on a data plan
will get 4g speeds up to 6GB data cap then reduced speeds above this amount. To recieve 4G beyond 6GB cost will be $20 to get 20GB at 4G speeds.

3 stores said you have to pay $20 extra just to get 4G which
      includes 20GB of data.

phoned *611 customer service said you have to switch back to
non promo plan (ie you paid $30 for their $45 plan )and add the $20 premium data to get 4G so the plan now the plan with
      4G now is $65

So if the last case is true the cost savings over say fido
they have promo for unlimited talk and text plus 1GB at 4G LTE $57 is much less given they have superior coverage and
their 850 freq band penetrates concrete buildings better than Mobilicity’s 1700 band. Off course if you are heavy data user getting 20GB for $20 is cheap

  • nemein

    Come to Quebec :(

  • hoo dat

Judging from the comments over at HoFo earlier, there aren’t too many people who are impressed with what they see.

  • Mobilicity is so slow like a dropped child

Its a lie. Biggest scam ever.

  • wewewi

And I thought Videotron wasnt that bad..

  • Ultraman

been testing for about 10 times already. Same speed. No improvement!

  • bob

the 21mbps network is only for those who have the premium data :(

  • Will

I highly doubt that you will be able to experience faster speeds, just like when Mobilicity promised for better coverage in the Vancouver area. For the last 1.5 years, the network coverage and speed has been the same. Mobilicity is all about unfulfilling promises, and is positioning itself to be acquired.

    Ex-Mobi, Now WIND user

  • paulo

Has anyone seen any speed increase yet? On my phone, a nexus S whenever I look at the network type it only registers as HSPA NOT HSPA+ and have not seen any speed improvements in Edmonton. Still love Mobi though!

  • ace

tempted to go pick up a $30/month plan, but is this for life or only for like 1 year and then you have to pay the full price again?

  • cheenachatze

No speed improvement so far. I’m in DT Toronto.

  • Joe

    Paulo:

Nexus S does not support HSPA+. The max is 7.2 mbps HSPA (which is basically 3 mbps in the real world.

Galaxy Nexus however does support HSPA+.

  • Bruce

    Dont think its fair.

  • Geo

Note don’t waste time testing download speed.

    it’s a $20 data add-on option onto a regular fully priced

    plan

    Official new release below

smart mobile carrier delivers smartest 4G value around

TORONTO, Oct. 30, 2012 /CNW/ – Mobilicity today upgraded its unlimited network and started offering 4G speeds of up to 21Mbps. The unlimited carrier’s network 4G upgrade has resulted in the introduction of two new Premium Data offerings for heavy data users looking for the ultimate in 4G data speeds and affordability.

“Mobilicity has the most affordable 4G data service in Canada, said Mobilicity President and Chief Operating Officer Stewart Lyons. “Now, Canadians can enjoy premium data simply by adding it onto to any regular Mobilicity rate plan for only $20 a month – less than a dollar a day.”

Mobilicity’s new Premium Data Add-On provides 20GB of data at Mobilicity’s fastest speeds each month. On a daily basis, for example, the add-on will give customers fast and affordable access to 60 minutes of streaming video, 90 minutes of streaming music, 60 app, game or music downloads, 50 video or photo uploads, 80 webpage views AND 125 emails per day – all at the carrier’s fastest 4G network speeds.

Mobilicity today also launched a Premium Mobile Data Internet Plan and the Huawei E366 Premium Data Stick to provide data stick customers with 20GB of data at Mobilicity’s fastest speeds each month.

Designed for use with the Huawei E366 Premium Data Stick, Mobilicity’s Premium Mobile Data Internet Plan, for example, can enable fast and affordable access to 1,400 web pages and 1,400 emails a week, plus the ability to download 850 songs, 300 apps and games and 24 hours of streaming video a month – all at Mobilicity’s fastest 4G speeds.

    Pricing and availability
Mobilicity’s Premium Data Add-On can now be added onto any Mobilicity regular rate plan for only $20/month. Mobilicity’s Premium Mobile Data Internet Plan is available for only $50/month and the Huawei E366 Premium Data Stick is priced at only $79.99. Mobilicity’s Basic Mobile Data Internet Plan is now available for $35/month – $5 less than the company’s former $40/month data stick plan. The new premium plans and data stick are available at Mobilicity stores across Canada.

  • The Rock

Finalllllly the Rock has come back to Mobile Syrup. The Rock turns on his computer, opens up his home page only to see what the fuss is about. You jabronis can’t read?! The Rock says you’re candy a$$ses need to upgrade to 4G to experience the new speeds. Don’t make the Rock come down, drag your a$$ to a Mobilicity and make you change your plan.

If ya smellllll la la la la oyeeeee, what THE ROCK is cooking! *raises eyebrow*

    • Reno911

I nominate this for the “Worst Post of the Week”.

    • The Rock’s Fan

Who down voted The Rock, WTF?

  • Tester1234

Just tested with my T-mobile G2x, 2mb down and 595kb upload. Mobilicity…. I think I might go to Wind now.

    • aliwhatsit

you were happy with mobilicity before this article. why not pretend it never happened?

  • JimJones

I’m more interested in when their femtocells will be available and for what kind of price… no point of 4G if your house is a dead spot… if priced right I think femtocells can be a big game changer..
Anyone have an update on when they might go live with them?

    • STY

Great idea. Why should Mobilicity pay for expansion of their coverage area. Force their customers to pay for all the equipment individually. Genius!!!!

  • Elsa

like Michael implied I’m alarmed that people can profit $9804 in a few weeks on the computer. have you read this web page Buck6.com

  • Tester1234

From what I understand from its new fair usage policy. Basically for us basic unlimited users, we will be faced with a 6 gb throttle but without any speed increase because the higher speed is only for premium users only? WOW. So I was expecting 4-5 month for a downgrade? Classic.

  • aregularonhofo

OMG…absolutely HILARIOUS…while the fake Lazer Android (aka bluenote73 the HoFo Mobilicity Wimp/Coward/Fanboy) continues to make a total fool out of himself with more lies the provider is screwing every Sub they have…man are some of you complete i****s. Ha! Ha! Ha!

  • Mark

Testing in Vancouver, and getting the same old same old on my Galaxy Nexus – spotty connections, maybe 1.2mbit download, 385kbit upload speeds. Nothing changes. I’ll give them a month, when my 1year is due (and I lose the 50% discount I have from last xmas sale), and may give Wind a try.

  • Koolbreeze

Now,I don’t feel too bad for switching to Telus and paying $50+ tax for 6GB of LTE! I wonder how long it will take Mobilicity to get real 4G and how much they’ll charge more for it.

  • nuclearbroccoli

Give it a while to see improved speeds guys. When Wind announced thatAlberta was upgraded, it took a couple of weeks before I saw the difference everywhere. Maybe the announcement was just a little premature like Wind’s was.
Also, keeping in mind this is just a prediction, if I use Wind as a basis for comparison, I suspect the improved speeds will come in around 7 – 9Mbps down. Upload I couldn’t guess though as Mobilicity seems to have faster upload speeds than Wind does in general.

    • hoo dat

It’s not a simple case of it being slow, the rules say that you HAVE TO buy a premium data package @$20 to be able to use HSPA+ speeds. In order to buy into the data package you also have to have a regularly priced plan. As most Mobilicty users as on some sort of discounted lifetime plan like the $25 BTS they’re going to have to accept up to 200-300% increases in their monthly bills. At least WIND doesn’t charge for its HSPA+ network and allows all user to take advantage of it.

    • STY

I didn’t think NB would tell such a lie. Many posting are now pointing to uploads of over 3 on Wind. Best post of Mobi was 1/10 of that (point 3) = .3

    • hoo dat

I did not even suggest he was lying about WIND’s upload speeds. Please quote me where I say or infer that. What I said, and I’m AMAZED I have to repeat this, is that according to Mobilicity’s own rules people who don’t buy into the 20GB package and give up their lifetime incentivised programs will NOT see HSPA+ speeds.

Even Stewart Lyons just tweeted, and I quote: “To clarify, the existing data plan is 6GB and AVERAGE throughput increases across the board so hopefully most people will get 2MB/s”.

Hopefully will get 2MB/s? Not much clarification there. Increases in 3G speeds are to be expected as more migrate to 20GB and HSPA+ speeds and all he’s expecting is an average of 2MB/s?

  • nuclearbroccoli

My impression reading the posts on this on hofo is that everyone gets the new speed and it was badly explained.

    • STY

NB, please stop doing your impressions, you are pretty bad at it.

  • nuclearbroccoli

That’s sad. 2Mbps with the upgrade?

    • hoo dat

I’m hoping that I’m reading his tweet wrong, but pretty nuch everything else backs this assumption up.

It’s a botched launched, once the dust settles let’s hope things aren’t as what they seem.

  • Dopey Mobi Chicka

Not worth upgrading and paying extra when it won’t even qualify to FnF 2010 or BTS plan users. Stupid move.

Should have just let everyone “option” to this speed, or let the customers who have supported Mobilicity since the beginning have a reward for their patience.

  • hoo dat

    From Mobi’s FAQ Page:

What is the Premium Data add-on?

Premium Data add-on provides you with 20GBs/month of data for your Mobilicity phone at our fastest speeds on our 4G network. After 20GBs of data usage before your due date, Premium Data remains unlimited but your speeds may be reduced.

Which plans work with the Premium Data add-on?

The Premium Data add-on works on our regular rate plans: $25 Unlimited Starter Plan, $35 Unlimited Plus Plan, $45 Unlimited Value Plan and $55 Unlimited Everything Plan.

How does Premium Data differ from Basic Data?

Basic Data provides you 6GBs/month of data for your Mobilicity phone at regular speeds on our 4G network. After 6GBs of data usage before your due date, Basic Data remains unlimited but your speeds may be reduced.

    How fast is Premium Data?

Premium Data speeds are up to 21mbps, but speeds may vary depending on factors such as handset type or network conditions.

    How fast is Basic Data?

The speeds for Basic Data vary depending on factors such as handset type or network conditions, but will not be as fast as Premium Data.

To recap: In order to get HSPA+ speeds you need to ditch your current plan (as it’s likely to be an incentivised “lifetime” special), sign up for the $20/20GB Premium Data Plan, and sign up for a regularly priced plan. This could cost $75 per month, where’s the value in that?

  • XR999

I swear Mobilicity is trying to kill themselves some days. Between their non-existent network expansion and this botched network upgrade (because no matter what this was a FAIL since it was poorly explained and poorly implemented) it makes me wonder are they really interested in staying in business.

Unless things start drastically changing, I can’t see a bright future for Mobilicity nor me ever considering them as my replacement carrier once I finish with Bhell.

  • nuclearbroccoli

Ouch. After reading Hoo Dat’s post, I question what Mobilicity is doing. I think Mobilicity overall has made pretty solid decisions up to this point, but this is messed up.
Mobi’s closest competitor is Wind, who is upgrading their network as well, but EVERYONE gets the new speeds. I’m not sure how this is competitive.
