As IFA 2012 winds down in Berlin, many tech bloggers are getting a chance to tour the show floor and see things that various manufacturers haven’t announced, or kept quiet about.
One such trend was Samsung’s move to LTE in their Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II models. Now this may not be a surprise, since both the Galaxy Note and GS3 are available in Canada with LTE support. But what is interesting is that these newer models are equipped with Samsung’s quad-core Exynos 4412 processor and a separate LTE baseband chip. It was previously thought that the reason North America’s LTE Galaxies were equipped with Qualcomm chips was because Samsung hadn’t designed Exynos to work with newer high-speed networks. It’s clear now that wasn’t the case.
While it hasn’t been announced for the rest of the world, select markets in Europe will have a LTE version of the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III running with Samsung’s Exynos 4412 chip. While battery life will surely take a hit, the Note II has a 3100mAh battery to make up for it. Still, Samsung may choose to equip the North American Note II with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 chips as they did with the GS3, but we’re hoping that they take the high (performance) road and go with Exynos.
Based on some of the benchmarks we’ve seen of the 1.6Ghz Galaxy Note II, it would be quite a performance upgrade over the previous generation, especially in the gaming department.
