Update: Sony starts rolling out Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for the Xperia S

Possibly some good news for Sony Xperia S users today. According to Sony Mobile they have started the rollout of the upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich, OS 4.0.4. In addition, to the standard ICS offerings, such as resizable widgets, recent apps button and better overall experience, Sony has also created “a completely new way to experience your media” by introducing a new “WALKMAN”, “Album” and “Movies” apps.

A video is below of all the new features, but they also say the upgrade might take a few weeks to arrive. In their blog post they note that it’s a 200MB file and “all Xperia S users will get a notification when the upgrade is ready, but direct availability in the phone may vary across different carriers.” In Canada, Sony sold the Xperia S directly in their Sony Stores, but locked to Rogers. Sony says “the availability and scheduling of this software upgrade will vary by market and carrier requirements.”

Let us know if/when you’ve upgraded.

Update: Sony Canada just tweeted that the update isn’t yet officially available to us Canadians: “The ‪#ICS‬ update for the ‪#Xperia‬ S began rolling out globally today! We’ll keep you posted when we have news for Canada.”
