Here’s the Samsung Galaxy Note Super Bowl ad (Video)

Samsung promised to deliver a new “Samsung’ed” ad that took aim at Apple fanboy/girls. This time instead of the focus being on the Galaxy S II, the upcoming Note took the spotlight. It’s above… what do you think of it?

  1. It started well enough, but the later 2/3rd is pure crap. Way to disappoint Android fans. (the ad, not the Note)

    • Not a fan of the song either.

i liked the gospel choir, marching band, BMX riders and cannonball, though! It’s a lot of visual that they pack into the commercial, after the iPhone lineup.

    • Too much emphasis on the pen! Lots of people aren’t even going to realize you can use your fingers too. Otherwise a good ad.

    • “Can’t believe I’m missing the big game for this”…did anyone notice that by “Canadianizing” the commercial, they have the Canadians waiting in line wearing T-shirts in the middle of winter?
It’s all in the details Samsung….

    • @Aaron: I’m in Calgary, and I saw kids walking around in t-shirts at the zoo yesterday. It was something like 10 above!

Also, if you really want to “Canadianize” it, the “big game” would be the Stanley Cup Finals, which are at the end of May/beginning of June.

  4. Maybe a little bit over the top, but… I think it’s hard to make a “smart” 90 second spot for a phone, using the format they’ve been using for these ads, thusfar.

Overall, it’s still an effective ad… just not as effective as previous efforts.

(On another note… that Honda CRV/Ferris Bueller ad…)

  5. Definitely over the top… though to be honest, it kinda made me want to switch my Amaze 4G for one of these…

  6. A for effort for sure! Samsung actually tried to do something nice, and it turned out pretty well compared to other commercials. Anyone else tired of hearing the same spots for “Smash” again and again?

This is a Canadian-only commercial, afaik! Wonder what the Americans got from Samsung instead, because i haven’t seen anything.

Public Mobile had some creative “Roam Rage” ones, too, although it’s disappointing that they ONLY have service in Montréal and Toronto.

Overall, the ones who tried, like Samsung and Public, deserve acknowledgement. Unlike the lame commercials that normally air on Canadian NFL, Sammy and Public at least make me consider the products and/or services they are selling. Let’s see more businesses create worthwhile Super Bowl commercials! :)

    • Ad is posted by SamsungCanada, and the very beginning (0:00) says “Canadian”. Haven’t seen this air in USA,

It is, however, produced by 72andsunny in California. USA’s getting the Note later on the 19th, unlike us who can get it on the 14th.

    • It’s the superbowl commercial, like the title of the article states, they just changed the titles of the cities to ‘canadianize’ it. If you want more proof, click the following link of all the superbowl commercials.

    • I reread your comment and I was the one that failed a bit there haha. In any case, the Americans got the same commercial, just different text stating different cities. Sorry, I saw the superbowl commercials on the site I mentioned in my prior comment prior to seeing this ad on mobilesyrup and didn’t notice they changed the cities when I posted my first comment.

  9. Big question is, will any of these carriers get the Galaxy Note?
    * WIND Mobile
    * Mobilicity (not greatest fan of them, but they carried the Gravity Touch, Galaxy Mini, and all Nexuses)
    * Videotron (see Mobilicity)

Phone seems rather big, like a cross between a tablet and smartphone. It’s a good experiment, will have to try a demo unit! :)

    • I love that Jobs was so comfortable making blanket statements. I cannot wait to see an iPhone with a pen, I cannot wait to see the iphone go above is 3.5″ limit that Jobs said they wouldn’t ever go because no one wanted it that big.
I just wish Jobs was around to eat his words.
Of course, he would just say that he invented something new and call it an iStick or something and say that because they made it a bit different its now magical.

  15. The reason the initial Samsung ads were so clever was because they mocked the Apple fan base for lining up for a rather mediocre phone when other more feature rich phones abound.

This commercial makes slight reference to that and then just goes crazy in a nonsensical song and dance routine that tosses out all the wit. Thumbs down.

  17. It started just like the rest of the Samsung commercials but then it got really long and pointless. The iphone lineup got old pretty fast too. That only made sense around iphone 4S launch time. The phone itself looks too big + cumbersome.

  18. At the risk of being thumbed down, I rather liked this ad. The initial ads while clever, were basically preaching to the converted. The commercials basically reminded android users why we don’t use iphones, but didn’t do anything to make android seem better than ios. It was kind of pointing at iphone users and saying “You have a bad taste in products.” You’re not going to switch users by basically calling them stupid. Also, saying 4G a bunch doesn’t seem to help either, no matter how much you want it to.
This ad however was a rather grand idea that will at least get stick in people’s heads about the key points, which is what an ad is suposed to do. Plus, the Darkness is awesome.

    • Yeah, good commercial. Eventually, they may have to use another idea besides iPhone lineups, but for now, this is probably one of the best Super Bowl commercials that aired in Canada.

BTW, we pay for ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and other American channels, but CTV puts their logos and their commercials all over those channels we pay for. This is sad in a way, because we can’t see USA commercials, even on the American channels. i’ve also heard that some parts of the game were cut. But at least Samsung had a nice commercial.

    • I’m on Shaw Direct and I saw all the original ads on NBC. I think Videotron (in Quebec) and Shaw Direct keeps the original NBC feed and Bell put their CTV channel over NBC. But using Bell for your TV needs was your first mistake.

  24. This ad was pretty pathetic.

It certainly did not make me want to even entertain the notion of switching my iPhone 4 for a SGN this year. That, in my opinion, is a huge failure.

They should be trying to switch people from the largest user base (iOS) to their devices by showing functionality, not belittling these users. Even Apple’s Mac guy and PC guy ads had a key benefit to using a Mac thrown into each of them. This ad has nothing like that.

The fandroids can herp and derp all they want about how great this ad was but it’s not going to make people want to switch to a SGN. That and the friggin screen is way too big for a phone that I want to carry in the front pocket of my jeans.

    • I agree. It seems more the commercial is geared towards calling the users i****s. That’s not going to gain them sales, regardless of which side of the fence you’re on. At least with the “If You Don’t Have an iPhone” ads, as arrogant as they were, they showed off the phone and what were the benefits of having one. This just says “Oooh, pen and big screen” and doesn’t speak of the phone’s functionalities, it just insults the people on the other side of the fence.

  25. @mac-warrior +1 I totaly agree with ya. I wouldn’t trade my top of the line Iphone 4S for a dumb android. Androids have bad software that creates bad battery life on there phones. And there software is kinda slow and laggy. My Iphone is pure joy and ease to use. My iphone never has force closes like androids do. My Iphone never freezes like androids do. My Iphones battery lasts me a few days not 3-4 hours like a android does. And atleast Iphones get Updates that apple promises, unlike Androids that tend not to get updates after the phone is a year old.

  26. I think these ads are more targeted towards keeping the converted in Samsung’s fold and those on the fence (the hordes of feature phone users). I also see it as a message to the non-Samsung Android users by reminding the HTC/LG/Motorola/etc about the Samsung option as well as converting as many of the non-Android smartphone crowd (e.g. RIM) towards the Samsung fold, considering there’s a shocking amount of people that equates touchscreen = iPhone.

Frankly, they aren’t aiming at the Apple fanboys, especially those that will actually waste the time to line up at all. It’s like why Christian missionaries don’t really use their time on Muslims, but rather target the no-religion/agnostic/various passive Eastern religions. It’s more effective for the buck.

  27. I liked the ad. In was in line with what android represents – Being different, standing out and getting enjoyment from your device. It wasn’t a stuffy, boring tech demo like an unnamed product *cough* Apple iPhone.

With Android you can pretty much do anything with your phone, making it virtually different from your friends phones. I go to parties and 3 or 4 people using iPhones all have the same background or ringtones… Sad, really. They all pull out their phones to see if it was their notification going off. This commercial is pretty much saying break free from being like everyone else… Rock out, live a little and have some fun.

Or you can choose to be boring. Life is about choices… You choose what side of the fence you want to be on. I’ll take the side with people being shot out of cannons. lol

I’m grabbing a Note on the 14th. Get yours. See you on the other side. ;)

  29. I was disappointed that they didn’t show what makes the phone special. A lot of stylus action but that’s it.

It looked just like the other s2 ads bashing iphone users. Most people wouldn’t have realized that it was actually the Note until someone whipped out the S pen. I would have appreciated showing off the special android features that come with an increased screen size. It just could have been a lot better. I think the other commercials that samsung put out were better at promoting the Note’s functions!

look how insecure the iFans are… Clearly the ad works if you have to tell the world that despite the commercial you are smart and happy. “Well my phone is smooth, and my friend has the same one, we drink lattes together”
