Sony Ericsson confirms Android 4.0 upgrade coming to Xperia Play, arc, ray, pro, and others

Android users are eagerly waiting for manufacturers to announce upgrade plans to the new OS 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Recently, HTC announced various device upgrades (Sensation, EVO 3D, Amaze 4G), plus Motorola stated the RAZR will be getting bumped up early 2012. Now, Sony Ericsson has formally revealed their plans. On the company blog they stated that they “plan to upgrade the entire 2011 Xperia portfolio* to the next version of Android known as Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich. We are working on merging our current Xperia™ experience with the new features in Android 4.0. More detailed information regarding this upgrade, timing and global availability will be communicated in due course here on the blog”.

So that’s good news, the Xperia family will be getting the latest OS, but there’s a very visible asterisk. Here’s the full list of Xperia devices that SE has put on the upgrade path: Xperia arc and arc S, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo and neo V, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active, Xperia ray and the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. As expected, Xperia X10 users are out of luck, but looks like other Xperia handsets that are available in Canada will eventually be upgraded. Now we wait.
