Mobilicity CEO: “Bold 9900 is coming soon, weeks not months”

WIND, Videotron and Mobilicity have been so incredibly silent over the past few weeks regarding the new BlackBerry devices. They are all waiting for T-Mobile, then we’ll most likely have a better indication of pricing and official dates. There was a hint that Mobilicity would be getting the Bold 9900, their CEO, Dave Dobbin, recently used this device during their cross-Canada “We’ll Prove It To You Tour”. Now on Twitter, Dobbin confirmed that the 9900 will be added to their lineup: “Bold 9900 is coming soon, weeks not months.”

  2. I was in Portland, Oregon last week (Aug 25th). I went into a T-Mobile store, and they had the dummy model of the Bold 9900 in the store.

  4. Is there gonna be a dumb “FACT” about the keyboard size versus the screen size? How about a random comment by phoneguy about how Public Mobile is the best? Or how about the Apple lawsuit fanboys chiming in? I anticipate random heated discussions no matter the subject of the post.

On a real note: even though I consider RIM devices archaic, I’m glad to see Mobilicity getting more phones.

  5. This will at least give RIM a little boost. The Mobilicity Curve 9300 with two months of unlimited talk/text/Internet is one of the best deals out there. Will the new Curve make it too?

    • funny how you say that, but the Wink is the top selling phone with the $25 back to school being the top selling plan….people want value for the most part.

    • Todd, there are a lot of Android phones on sale at Mobilicity, from the Motorola Spice to the HTC Panache to the Nexus S.

The Spice is a decent beginner’s smartphone, with a Torch-like slide-out keyboard and a bonus Bluetooth headset. The low resolution screen and the old Android 2.1 software could hold it back, however. It’s a penny under $100 at Mobilicity, but Walmart sells it for $30 more with two months of talk and text as a bonus.

The HTC Panache has a faster modem, while the Nexus S is considered Pure Google. The Panache costs $50 less, but the Nexus S has bigger, on-board flash storage. Both are pretty well-build phones, and it would be a little difficult for me to choose between them.

The only BlackBerry phone on a sale price from Mobilicity is the Curve 9300 from Walmart. Instead of $299.99, Walmart sells it for one penny less than $180, and includes two month of talk, text, and BlackBerry Internet service. That deal is really tough to beat.

To sum it up, both the Spice and the Curve are tempting for me as low-end phones. And the mid-range Androids also tempt me. :D

    • we know and blackberry users do not care. it has been like that for a long time

@ Todd: just sayin there are still people who do not like android phones. Yes i think carriers should have more because it is a great platform and the phones are great, but some people prefer the feel of a blackberry. Also the blackberry is not a dumb phone… yes it is not a dual core superphone but it has all basic the smartphone features and some features some top of the line android do not have AKA NFC. so do not say a blackberry is useless just because it does not have android

  9. I work for a carrier, and I’ve done training with the 9900, and it atually is a really solid device. No, it’s not quite as good as phones like the SGSII, Evo3D or Sensation, but compared to the 9780 and torch, this is a whole new phone. Fast, responsive OS, good keyboard, actually pleasant to use.

now, would I ever pay full retail for one? Hell no!

    • They can only get what’s out there, and so far the AWS Android lineup isn’t that great. There’s the MyTouch 4G (4G with Wind/MObi? HA!) and G2x, but those are Tmo branded phones, doubt Wind could get their hands on them. Only other phones available is a Galaxy S variant or a Sensation.

    • The Mobilicity Android selection is pretty acceptable, if you ask me. Four devices from four different manufacturers:

      * The low-end Motorola Spice has a few flaws but is under $100.
      * The HTC Panache and Nexus S are the higher-end phones at a penny less than $300 and $350 each, respectively.
      * The Sony X10 is oddly priced. No front-facing camera and no Gingerbread *yet*, but still $400. They should lower it to $250.

Wind’s selection mostly disappoints me, except for the the Optimus 2X and a Nexus S high-end phones. Besides that, the XT720 is inferior to the Sony X10, the Tribe is similar to the Spice, and the U8100 mimics the Galaxy 550. It would be better if all three had lower prices: under $200 for the XT720, and under $100 for the rest.

Vidéotron’s selection is mostly a mix of what Wind and Mobilicity offers. The Samsung Galaxy Mini is currently exclusive to Vidéotron, however, but costs too much at over $200 and should be available for less at Mobilicity this year. i tend to call the company “VidéotroP” because they charge rather high prices.

Overall, all three AWS companies could use some improvement with their Android selection, but Mobilicity has a “short and sweet” offering. Vidéotron offers the exact same smartphones except for the X10. Wind has a poor selection of affordable Android devices.

  12. Mobilicity should focus on getting better phones than trying to beat the competition with better plan pricing.

  13. Alex is a sheer MORON if he thinks the Motorola Spice is a decent phone, it’s pure garbage still at 2.1 with no future up-date and a total piece of crap-it has so many problems it takes pages to list them and Mobilicity is a PATHETIC for still trying to sell this unit to uninformed customers. Mobilicity is a useless provider with poor service and their CS is horrendous.

  14. F********e works for Mobilicity and he is totally bias, just like the morons on Howard Forums pushing this garrbage provider with lies simply to get new customers and distorting how the service is which is pure crap also. Just as bad as Wind and in many cases worse. Mobilicity’s plans are for life because they have no clue how long they’ll last and why they offer rates they won’t be able to sustain out of desperation. The data speeds are so slow high end Androids are useless and with so many dead spots in the GTA the CEO has the gull to claim they’re better than Rogers. What an i***t.

  15. Kudos to Mobilicity obtaining another phone for their lineup. If either Mobilicity or Wind gets a new phone, the other will benefit since they will work on each other’s network once unlocked. Hopefully this will satisfy some of the Blackberry users looking to upgrade. I don’t use Blackberry but it’s nice to see new content introduced.

  16. It seems to me that Wind/Mobi can only get a new phone if T-Mobile gets it first!!? Once the AT&T/T-Mobile merger is done and they get rid of AWS what are Wind/Mobi going to do?? I doubt these manufactures are going to make a AWS device just for them…

  18. While I’ve heard a ton about how crappy mobilicity’s service is, all I want to say is that there are people out there who 1. don’t need data or a super lightning-speed crystal-clear reception 2. just need to have their hands on a normal phone and don’t want to dish out the cash for all that fingamajik. All things aside, If mobilicity wants to offer unlimited talk/text/data to me for $25 without a contract, I’m totally happy to see the competition.

And let’s face it, I called Fido the other day to cancel my plan, they’ve immediately offered me something that was a pretty sweet deal…if only I don’t have to sign a contract for it. I’d say this is the magic of competition.
