WIND on planned network outage: “we’ll need to shut it down for a while”

Graham Kingma, Head of Call Centre Operations at Wind Mobile has informed WIND Mobile customers in GTA and Calgary that a planned network outage to make the network better. This outage will happen between 1:00am to 3:00am on Wednesday morning.

Kingma states “Hey everyone. WIND customers in the GTA, Calgary and the surrounding areas may experience an interruption of network service between 1am and 3am EST tonight (early morning Wednesday, February 24th 2010). We’re upgrading the system – trying to make the network better, and unfortunately that means we’ll need to shut it down for a while. Hopefully most of you won’t even notice, but for those of you who are out and about, or working the night shift, or watching the late show, you may be inconvenienced by this brief interruption of service. We really appreciate your patience.”

Perhaps they are getting ready to officially launch Edmonton this week… we’re hearing the date is the 25th.

  1. Maybe this is in response to some posts on their forums with claims of not receiving or making calls to certain numbers other than WIND subscribers.

  3. Rogers never shut down there network for upgrades. Let’s see Analog-TDMA-GSM-Edge-HSPA-HSPA+ all upgraded without any intruptions.

  4. Rogers is a bad example. I remember when no one in Canada could receive incoming calls for the better part of a day because of a server glitch. That was back on the tdma network. I’ve also seen it where Rogers/Fido customer cell phone numbers just gave fast busy (not even voicemail) for hours at a time here in Edmonton shortly after the HSPA network was rolled out here.

The big three would never let you know that they are going to have an outage. They just do it and hope you don’t notice.

  5. That’s not true actually. Rogers and most recently Telus (yesterday) have both had multiple system wide outages during peak hours I might add and for much longer periods of time.
