Public Mobile: “what you say on your phone is more important than what your phone says about you”

It seems like it’s taking forever for Public Mobile to launch and even with the delays, now targeting mid-2010 sounds even longer. I guess building a network from scratch takes a bit more effort than simply putting towers up. Everyday gets closer and today they’ve added some new features to their website, specifically when it comes to their plans, phones and coverage. No new info is added just fancy animation.

Under the “Our Plans” section they continue to give greater insight into their desired target market by saying “Seems like everyone has a mobile phone in their hands these days but actually, there are a lot of us that have yet to join the conversation yet. At Public Mobile we want to make it affordable for more people to talk more. That’s why we created unlimited talk and text for a flat rate of just $40 per month. No credit check. No contract. No surprises. No kidding.”

So far it sounds like all the carriers are saying the same thing! Under the animation of “Our Phones” and “Coverage”, it states “At Public Mobile we think that what you say on your phone is more important than what your phones says about you. And we know that everybody has their own way of saying things. We have phones for people who love to chat. People who think out loud. And people who talk with their hands… You might be wondering what will unlimited talking and texting mean for me? Are there really no limits? Can I just talk for as long as I want, whenever I want?… We want you to talk as much as you like, with whoever you like, whenever you like.”

So clearly Public will have no high end devices. With this we remember waaaayyyy back in April of last year when CEO of Public Mobile Alek Krstajic said they will offer a $40 “unlimited flat-rate talk and text package, with no term commitment, no credit checks, no fine print and no surprises…there will be a lot of places to get a phone from us, we will be where our value conscious segment lives, works and plays. I don’t think you’ll see us in the traditional high-end malls because our segment doesn’t actually shop there. I think you’ll see us do some very interesting things on distribution, it’s a bit of the secret sauce… you will see us in strip malls, yes”.

So nothing has really changed in almost a year!! The only new info was a couple weeks ago when Krstajic was on the TV show The Lang & O’Leary Exchange and gave more insight into their plans. The $40 is the basic talk and text plan. Krstajic said “To the U.S. it’s $5.00 flat rate. If you want unlimited Canadian long distance it’s a $5.00 add on. If you want unlimited U.S. long distance it’s another $5.00 add on”.

Who’s excited for Public Mobile to launch? We just want them to launch… do you?

  3. Their ZTE Bar phone is going to destroy their company if that is going to be the only phone they’re gonna sell with their already-beaten service.

What good is unlimited service, when you have a crappy phone that doesn’t deliver…

Instead of thinking ways to defend your ways and attack other companies, why don’t you guys @ PM have a good night sleep and come up with something that BENEFITS competition.

  6. I USED to be excited about them… They were the first ones I heard about when it came to the new companies, and they are apparently going to be the last to launch (with crapy CDMA technology) I thought we were over CDMA? There were no major companies in Canada left on CDMA, WHYYYYY Would you build a new network and implement old technology?!

  7. No major companies left on CDMA you say? I’m pretty sure that most of Bell’s and Telus’ customers as well as their lower price divisions are all on CDMA. Their new HSPA network is solely for the iPhone and the 9700, which is a very small segment of their business compared to everyone else on contract with a CDMA phone. I don’t understand why people like to complain about CDMA so much, it works! For most people who talk and text they can’t tell the difference. And those who can is because they’ve left the country and tried to use their phones elsewhere. Public Mobile is going after a part of the market that want cheap unlimited plans or sort of a landline/cell hybrid with out restrictions on call time.

  9. For those of you complaining about CDMA take a closer look at the market they are targeting. They are going after people who want purely voice and maybe text messaging. Thats it. CDMA is a great choice for that type of service. High capacity, excellent existing coverage and lots of low cost handsets available.

We don’t need 10 carriers all offering the iPhone, Blackberry Bold and Nexus One.

  10. So they are basically saying “ignore all those fancy phones, it’s what you say not what your device is”. I guess you have to take that stance when you have no hope of getting any phones people want. Even WIND and Mobilicity has access to flagships like the Nexus One, N900, Bold 9700, HD2 and Xperia X10. They’ve got nothing.

And guess what? That $40 plan is already beaten by WIND and I’m sure Mobilicity will put the final nail in the coffin.

  12. I was excited for Public Mobile at one point but once I learned they were coming with CDMA phones, I became quite sad. In the article there is a lot of talk about catering to “their segment” of customers. If that’s the case, then their demograpic must not travel because as we all know, CDMA is not your friend when traveling abroad. PubMo will be great for those that never ever go outside of the GTA.

  13. First, Public’s target market isn’t people who want a fancy phone i.e. any of you. They’ve stated that repeatedly. The % of the market that actually cares about which phone they carry is significant, but there’s also a large part of the market that doesn’t care at all which device they’re holding – they care about their monthly bill and how much talk time they get. Considering their targeted market, Public is right on track to steal marketshare from all the pay-as-you-go segement, and budget conscious clients. CDMA vs 3G/4G means squat to this demographic. They need a phone that works well (CDMA is reliable nonetheless), and more importantly they can afford. There’s yet to be a competitor in this segement – many have tried but did a terrible job, or eventually got sucked into the flashy phone business. Public’s not for me, but rest assured they’ll find their market and make their money.

Second, Telus’ hspa network is for much more than just the iphone and 9700, about 7 other phones running on that network, and only expanding.

  14. Also, WINDS ‘Always Shout’ plan is the most comparable at $45. Yes, $5 does matter to this market. Almost unbelievable, but true.

  15. You can get $40 unlim talk & txt from WIND: $35 Always Talk + $5 unlim txt add-on = $40. Great price from both companies.

Not entirely sure how the CDMA issue will effect them – their target markets have a lot of new Canadians who are used to having a SIM card and easily taking their phone to other networks.

Also, 5 years from now will there still be a decent selection of CDMA phones being manufactured?
