A year ago today I remember hopping from various big box stores – Best Buy, Future Shop and Sears – to see people lineup for the RIM’s first tablet (yes, there was a lineup). On April 19th, 2011 the BlackBerry PlayBook was released to the masses, dubbed as the “World’s first professional tablet” had a 7-inch display, a 1GHz processor with highlighted features being its ability to multitask and play Flash videos. The PlayBook is well designed, but had a rough start. Users complained that RIM omitted important aspects like a native contact, email and calendar client. However, a year later, RIM has successfully shipped over 1,350,000 PlayBooks (Q1 had 500,000, Q2 had 200,000, and 150,000 in Q3, and Q4 had 500,000) and pumped out all the missing and needed features to users with the PlayBook OS 2.0 update.
Next up for RIM is to launch a 3G/LTE version of the tablet, which will most likely be announced at the upcoming BlackBerry World in May. Happy Birthday PlayBook, may the 2nd year be much better.
