Wi-Fi certification is a process every modern device must pass through in order to make it to market and the Mercury, BlackBerry’s upcoming QWERTY keyboard Android smartphone, just became the latest handset to earn the Wi-Fi Alliance’s seal of approval.
On February 17th, the Wi-Fi Alliance, the Austin, Texas-based group that oversees the entire Wi-Fi standard, certified Mercury as compliant with a variety of Wi-Fi technology, including the 802.11ac standard.
When the DTEK50 and DTEK60 earned their Wi-Fi certification, it was more an event; the certificates confirmed the phones’ go-to-market names. This time around, the certificate is less revealing, referring to the Mercury by its model number.
Still, the certificate confirms the Mercury is one step closer to making its way to Canadian consumers.
BlackBerry will officially detail the device at its Mobile World Congress presentation on February 25th.
