Nintendo’s Switch doesn’t come with a Joy-Con Charging Grip

Now that the dust has settled, we’re beginning to learn more about Nintendo’s upcoming ‘Switch’ console-handheld hybrid video game system.

While the upcoming gaming console comes with two Joy-Con controller in the box, along with a grip that combines both NES-like gamepads into one device, the included grip attachment doesn’t actually charge the controllers.

According to report stemming from Eurogamer, the Joy-Con Charging Grip is set to be sold separately by Nintendo. The actual bundled grip is little more than a plastic shell that allows Joy-Con controllers to be held in a form factor that closely resembles that of a standard video game controller.

Nintendo says that Joy-Con controllers without the charging grip come in at around 20 hours of use on a single charge and take approximately 3.5 hours to recharge, whether in use or charging while the system is off. The Joy-Con Charging Grip, similar to the Switch’s Pro Controller, features a USB-C charging port.

While disappointing, it’s important to keep in mind that Joy-Con controllers will charge whenever they’re attached to the Switch’s main tablet, meaning that maintaining their power only becomes and issue when using the console in TV mode.

As we reported last week, Nintendo’s Joy-Con Charging Grip will cost $39.99 CAD.
