Those who missed the Kickstarter campaign for Nextbit Robin, a cloud-focused, colourful Android smartphone, now have a chance to purchase the device directly from the company’s website.

While the current exchange rate might be a factor, the Robin is available for $399 (USD) – which is $100 more that the pre-release crowdfunding price tag – bringing the smartphone’s current price close to $600 (CAD) when additional shipping costs are added in. The Nextbit Robin comes in two colours, Midnight and Mint. For those interested in the device, the GSM version of the Nextbit Robin is the best option for Canadians.

Since the smartphone is cloud focussed, each Robin comes equipped with 100GB of online storage, runs Nextbit’s Android skin, and features a Snapdragon 808 processor, 5.2-inch 1080p IPS display, 3GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, 2680mAh battery with quick charging, 13 megapixel rear-facing camera with phase detection autofocus and 5 megapixel front-facing camera.

Nextbit raised $1.3 million from 3,611 backers within 30 days during its Kickstarter campaign.

Update – Feb. 20th: Nextbit took to Twitter to announce that initial inventory of the Robin is sold out, which occurred in just two days. There was no indication from the company as to how many units it sold, but indicated that more stock will be available next week.

Update #2 – Feb. 23: Nextbit has replenished its stock of Robin and put the cloud-focused device back up for sale. The company is showing that Robin will ship to you within 2 weeks.

I was lucky enough to snag one at the early kickstarter price, also back when the CDN dollar was a little better. Even so, i’d still say this is a good deal at $399 US.

Not when converted to CAD. there are excellent alternatives at lower CAD prices

Did you even read the comment, early backers were $299 and this was around early October last year…sub $400CAD back then for Nexus 5X specs with more ram and double local storage.
There will always be lower priced alternatives for any phone.

It’s funny you’re the one who’s asking if I read the comment when you clearly didn’t. I’m saying about “i’d still say this is a good deal at $399 US.”. Which goes up to 560CAD, without shipping or customs. Ya. There are better options for the price.

i would still argue that it’s still a good price for a unique high spec’d unlocked phone. For sure there are cheaper phones out there. The nexus 5X is obvious. Oneplus phones are good too (though the import fee can be brutal and personally not a fan of the build quality). But the Robin comes with 100gb of cloud storage for the life of your phone and a super energetic dedicated team. Something i can’t say for the comparable Alcatel and Asus phones out there.

    • Mo Dabbas

You don’t pay import fees with OnePlus anymore. You pay regular taxes and that’s it.

It’s a good price depending how well it works I would say. I really have my doubts about the concept (especially storing apps in the cloud).

Thing is, lots of companies are dropping decent spec’ed phones for the 400 CAD range. Even now Huawei and Asus are trying to gain some north american ground. My only real gripe about this product is that the shipping time is too late in my opinion. The oneplus 3 rumours are starting and the next gen of phones are coming out soon (with more advanced hardware than those on the robin). so yeah, I think if this phone was released in Fall of last year it would’ve hit a home run.

    • MatroXX

Again, there will always be lower priced alternatives, none of which includes what this phone is offering with a unique package and integrated cloud storage.
But if you don’t care about that, you can always pick up that $4 phone.

    • Mo Dabbas

no no, that’s not your first reply. your first reply is about the 300 USD which makes it around 400 back then and it is a good price for a phone.
Regarding the cloud storage, we’ll see how good it works before making a conclusion. I didn’t buy it back then because I had my doubts about it.

$4 CAD or USD?? also, with a contract or without??

I did likewise…any news on shipping? I have heard nothing yet.

    • Tavis Dunn

I’ve been following them on twitter for awhile. Lots of people asking when their phone will ship, the latest i read was this week. Let’s hope!

    • Tavis Dunn

Correction….they actually started shipping out yesterday….just have to wait for our place in the queue!

not sure what the future will be for smartphones in canada. my salary didn’t go up that much to buy a new phone every year. for now carry my old apple phone around even if i would try a robin,
