Apple TV update hints at major Siri improvements

For the longest time, Apple TV was referred to as a hobby by Apple execs. Something that was deliberately not the focus of too much of Apple’s attention. While the company worked on the platform, channels were added slowly, and improvements were irregular.

Today, Apple released the first tvOS software update for the new Apple TV. This is a product that was released only a few weeks ago, and they’re already shipping fixes and improvements (though the update doesn’t mention any major feature changes). Clearly, the Apple TV is more than just a hobby at this point. In fact, Apple now mentions the Apple TV in its boilerplate PR text, something that hadn’t happened up until the latest release.

In addition to this bug fix release, Apple also seeded a new beta for Apple TV developers, tvOS 9.1 beta 1. As we reported last month, Siri will be able to search Apple Music on Apple TV early next year, and this beta includes some of that support, so Apple can fine tune the functionality to make sure it’s working as expected before including it in a future release.

If you’re one of those users who been waiting years for Apple TV to graduate from its hobby status, you should be very excited about the platform, given what we’ve seen the last few weeks. You can download the new Apple TV update over the air, just like you would on an iOS device.
