Periscope, Twitter’s live streaming app, first launched with iPhone on March 26th and passed a million downloads within the first 10 days of availability. Two months later, Periscope came to Android and within three weeks surpassed one million downloads, too.
Periscope announced today that over 10 million people have used Periscope, with “burgeoning usage” on a daily basis. The company noted that time watched, which Periscope says “is the metric we care about most,” has significantly increased since launching four months ago. The company is now seeing over 40 years worth of video watched per day, and has close to two million daily active users.
It’s unclear how many people are actually broadcasting, or, like Twitter, most of the usage is confined to silent consumption rather than content creation.
Periscope also stated that it wants its users “to know and feel that they’re contributing to a growing ecosystem” and that it “is measuring itself in a way that aligns with the value that the community.” That’s why, instead of focusing on growing its number of daily active users, it wants to build, like Netflix, time spent watching content.
“If we were motivated to grow DAU, we’d be incentivized to invest in a host of conventional growth hacks, viral mechanics, and marketing to drive up downloads,” said the company. “This direction doesn’t necessarily lead to a better product, or lead to success for Periscopers. We hold ourselves accountable to Time Watched as an organizational measure because it reflects the kernel of our product, and our core values.”
Founder Kayvon Beykpour said during a broadcast that it is considering implementing a fast-forward button so users can skip ahead during replays, and that it will continue its efforts to reduce spam.
