MTS announces iPad data plans, gives bonus of “Unlimited Wi-Fi”

It’s nice to see MTS taking full advantage of their new “4G” network. This brought their device lineup up to speed with the other carriers and now have the iPhone 4, BlackBerry Torch 9800, BlackBerry Bold 9780 and others. What’s really needed is some solid Android devices though. In addition, MTS has announced their iPad data plans and they are similar to the other carriers by offering 250MB for $15 per month and 5GB for $35 per month. Nothing earth shattering but they are generous by giving “Unlimited Wi-Fi at over 160 MTS Wi-Fi Hotspots”… thankfully you can get free Wi-Fi at millions of other locations in Canada.

  1. I would never get a mobile data plan for a tablet. Just get a half decent plan with a smartphone and tether the connection via wifi/bluetooth/usb, depending on the device. Does anyone ever really need two separate data plans?

  3. Holy cow $15 for 250mb? Im so glad that MTS did not bid for any national spectrum because that is horrible. Even the big 3 are able to offer 1 gig at $20. Not only is MTS learning how to build a HSPA+ network from Rogers, they are also learning their pricing strategy!

  4. Pfff, never sign a data plan for a tablet. I have unlimited data on the Wind Mobile portable hotspot (which can link up to 6 devices) for my laptop, cell phone and tablet (and a friend’s, if needed).

Plus, as others have said, you can’t go too far without bumping into a WiFi signal (usually public).

  5. Getting free WiFi at MTS hotspots is a much bigger deal than you think. Free public WiFi in Manitoba is so minimal it might as well not exist.

The iPad data plan isn’t that hot though. Better to get an unlimited data/unlimited tethering smartphone plan, and use the phone as a hotspot for the iPad.
