This is great news for those who are patiently waiting for MTS to switch on their new HSPA+ network. It will be going live before the end of the year and most likely in early November. A good sign of progress is that one of the listed devices to download the latest BlackBerry OS is the Curve 9300 3G… hopefully other BlackBerry devices will pop up such as the Pearl 3G, the new Bold 9780 or even the Torch 9800. What other devices would you like to see?
Check it out here at BlackBerry
(Thanks Lance!)
Hopefully mts gets some serious android phones like the htc desire or samsung galaxy s. I would drop Rogers immediately if they got those phones. So tired of not having a carrier in my region that brings out solid devices as they are introduced. Tired of the iPhone hype. I’ve been stuck with one iPhone after another because I can’t get anything different. Would love to see some htc phones

Yeah, MTS’ plans aren’t too shabby, especially when bundled. I would consider switching Shaw services if they beefed up their line of phones.
But I also really dislike MTS’ customer service, horrible, all across the board unfortunately.

In September the Winnipeg Free Press did an article containing quotations from Kelvin Shepherd, President of Manitoba Operations for MTS Allstream. Not directly attributed, but in that same article, it says the network is to light up “early next year.”
Over at HowardForumns, recent discussion appears to agree they will miss the Christmas season. People are claiming to have sources putting the new network in Feb. 2011.
Does MobileSyrup have any reason for the November timeframe givin in this paragraph which they can publically state? Even if just to say “our anonymous sources”? Or perhaps you are operating off information which is several months out of date?

Ok, HoFo has a source from yesterday with an MTS Connect employee showing off a Milestone unit, claiming a November sale date. Pretty sure there is a CDMA Milestone/Droid out there, but it’s an interesting coincidence to see November mentioned again….

Kdawg & AndroidVirgin: Why do the both of you rely on your provider to provide you with handsets? Seems rather silly to blame the providers because of their phone lineup. That’s like blaming Shaw because the content on the movie channels they carry sucks. Simply go out and buy a handset on eBay or elsewhere that suits your interests….just like you would rent a movie instead of waiting for it to appear on Shaw.
I have yet to go to a Rogers or MTS store to buy a handset. I don’t get why people stand in line/sign three-year contracts for a phone? I know the “Manitoba way” is to be cheap and everything should be free (I’ve lived here my whole life; not knocking you guys) but free phones are the crapiest ones. Pay to play.

I actually appreciate what you’ve said. I guess I’m a fradycat in a way. Not that I am against buying my own handset at all. I actually was going to try and get a bell vibrant but one day a rep said ya you can buy it and pay for the code. The next day they said I couldn’t buy it unless I was a customer. I’m inexperienced in this aspect of the cell phone market. I actually kinda want an htc desire. I guess I’m just worried that if I try and bring a phone over from somewhere that it won’t work or if it breaks I won’t have any support etc. Is there a website I can go to to give me the information I need to learn about unlocking and all this stuff? I have tried googling a bit but from what I have read there seems to be horror stories or many different opinions on how to do these things even for the same phones so I don’t know what is true and what is not. Any info you could give me would be awesome. Thx

Right now MTS uses CDMA phones.. and will generally only activate a phone that is officially theirs… i have some friends who have brought cdma bell phones over, and had to pay a small fee.. dunno if the fee was to bell to unlock it.. or to mts … but this is a good reason to not buy your phones online… just to make sure your carrier supports them.. especially if you are not experienced with the different technologies available.. IF they did have their HSPA network up and running.. and you know your were buying an unlocked phone.. thats a completely different story..
