Chatr is launching “in Montreal within the Fall time frame”

Rogers new discount brand “Chatr” launched today, offering Canadians located in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver yet another choice in wireless. There’s been much talk around this brand and how they are available in the same cities as the new entrants Wind Mobile Public Mobile and Mobilicity are or will be. Chatr offers a couple of plans $35 (Unlimited Talk) and $45 per month (Unlimited Talk & Text) and 4 devices (you can check them out here.

I quickly had a conversation with Garrick Tiplady, Senior VP at Chatr. He’s very excited for this brand to launch as it’s been in the works for over a year. One new development is that Chatr is not stopping at the 5 launch cities that were announced today. Tiplady said that “one of the core things we’ve always said around Chatr as we’ve been design the brand, designing the offer. It’s really about delivering a worry free experience in Talk and Text. With that we’ve always said one of number one priorities is we want to operational ready at launch. We’re operational ready today. We’re launching in 5 major markets across Canada. Soon to be in Montreal. We’ll be in Montreal within the Fall time frame, so we’re excited about getting to market.”

Montreal… Chatr is coming. We’re curious how Videotron and Public Mobile will respond to this news.

  1. Fall isn’t that when Videotron will open?

  2. I don’t get it. Isn’t this on Rogers network? Chatr could launch tomorrow in Montreal if they wanted to.

    • They are competing with themselves. So they won’t unless there is another competition (they don’t seem to believe Public Mobile is, but Videotron, that’s another story)

    • Right now they have no reason to. They will wait until Videotron launches, THEN go there: Hence the fall.

    • You know, if Mobilicity doesn’t get what they want from Robbers… erm I mean Rogers. It’ll be quite interesting on why. I’d like to see how this all plays out. If they lose, prepare for a riot! of one person…

  3. Videotron is currently re-selling Rogers so they probably have to wait until the agreement expires before they come to Quebec.

  5. It’s predatory pricing if ever there was… this is clearly an attack on new players and not a generous offering to Canadians. Beware…

  6. Unbelievable. I’ve just about had it with the industry as a whole. I’m one more anti-competitive launch away from telling them all to go to hell. I’m bringing back pay phones.

  8. One would think Mobilicity could use the delayed launch in Montreal as proof before the Competition Bureau that this is a fighting brand

  10. All I know is I have to go back tomorrow because the place I was at was pretty busy,I actually couldn’t believe how many individuals were signing up and that’s a good sign…I see this growing fast and hopefully in time that will bring data also.

  12. Just got on Chat-R and it is 100% solid…both voice/text and there is no comparison when it comes to Oakville and Richmondhill. In less than a month Chat-R will be catching up to the new entrants and I would love to see the government stop them then…I mean the difference is amazing and even at half price both M/W would not be worth it.You can support whoever you want, still this will be a great option for a LARGE number of individuals and once data comes in the future Bell/Telus will have a hard time catching up if they are not serious about change or move soon…whether you like it or not this move by Rogers is a wise one and it shows they don’t want to be defeated. The Newbies are in trouble and most of it is caused by their own ignorance/lies/false promises. What actually shows strength is the way Rogers is competing and the manner Mobilicity is whining similar to a low-rate company that shows total weakness indicating they are a weak company to believe/invest in…and they are ruining themselves without Rogers help.

  13. Too bad they are only offering crappy 2g phones and no data….also, since this whole thing is on an existing network, why not give the unlimited to all rogers customers? The infrastructure is already in place and has been for years, flip those switches and stop screwing your true customers just to be predatory

  15. Hey rocco,I heard from a friend working at Chat-R that activations were about 240 at his location. That’s yesterday and today. It’s slow but steady and I’m sure Orascom is scared of the target on its back.Bye bye Egyptians…

  22. well its easy to get the chat-r numbers.. when they activate you look at the upper right hand corner.. a co-worker said the number was 10,000 something I think that number is about right.. 3 days thus far and steady business.. how is the call clarity? I have read reports that the 3g voice is crystal clear.
