Feb. 18th Milestone availability removed by Best Buy

Oh no… what do we have here?? Looking at Best Buy this morning it seems that the lovely release date of Thursday, February 18th for the anticipated Motorola Milestone has been removed! One of two things could have happened here:

1. TELUS dropped the hammer on Best Buy for releasing the launch date and kindly asked them to remove it from the pre-order page.
2. The launch date has been pushed back.

We’d like to think of it as a gentle request to remove the date until it’s officially announced. The good news is that you can still pre-order the Android device. We’ll have more info soon… but I’m sure you can still count on the 18th.

  1. I’m gonna take a wild uninformed guess (really, i’m making up facts here!!) and say that the phone has been delayed because Telus forgot to plaster their name all over the device.

  2. Maybe they sold out of the pre orders?

  3. Best buy is infamous for that so it’s no surprise. It happens with apple products also and other things. As a former supervisor with best buy, you can’t really rely on their for products launches other than dvds, video games and cds.

  4. Maybe Telus realized they haven’t quite removed all of the phone’s features yet and they need more time to lock it down further and limit it’s functionality completely. ;) I can just hear them asking Moto to make sure the GPS only works with their paid app, no access to streaming media except for YouTube and so on.

On a serious note, I don’t see this as a big story. Neither party with actual input and control over the release has ever given any dates, so I never took the Feb. 18th date as all that firm or accurate.

  5. I really hope it is not delayed, although if you can still go into the store and pre-order it for 50$ then I don’t see how they can change they date.

  6. Yeah, it’s probably just Telus realizing they forgot to disable some feature and making sure they go back and cripple everyone’s firmware even more. Man, I really can’t wait for a root, just to get rid of all the branding.

  7. I’ve just returned from the BestBuy store in Vancouver, on Cambie, and the mobile department had no idea about this preorder. I even spoke with the store’s manager and he had no clue about how to take the preorder because it wasn’t in any of their papers. He was surprised when I showed him their own web site’s ad. He claimed that they got not info about it.

  8. @luc : I had the same issue with the Richmond location… They had no idea… And they had to call Cambie to get the info on how to do it… Because Cambie was the only location that knew…lol..

As a former BB emp, this isn’t surprising… I can guarantee BB will over sell the pre-orders and will not have enough phones at release…

  9. I’m dying to get the motorola milestone.
I can exchange my device using the 30-day retun policy by feb 24th. So, I’m praying to God that the milestone gets released by feb 18th. If it gets delayed any further I’m more or less stuck.

  10. It looks like Motorola is preparing to upgrade the OS from 2.0 to 2.1 for the Droid in the US market.

If that is true, then it is reasonable for Telus to delay the roll-out until after the official upgrade from Motorola.

I for one don’t mind to wait that extra week or two, if this means I can have the latest version of the OS.
