Amazon has no plans to launch a phone this year

For years Amazon has been rumoured to release a smartphone, dating well back to 2011. At one time analysts predicted the “Amazon Phone” would launch last year and “high-end smartphone with the 3-D screen.”

The rumours became more prevalent last week as Jessica Lessin, a former Wall Street Journal reporter, suggested that Amazon would finally release a smarpthone, but with a twist: “According to people familiar with Amazon’s effort” it would be free. However, as good as that model sounds, Amazon has responded to the news and stated to the publication that “We have no plans to offer a phone this year, and if we were to launch a phone in the future, it would not be free.”

Amazon has been very active in the tablet space with the Kindle lineup and the entrance into smartphone would be a natural progression for its services.
