Sony courts Android developers by releasing beta Flash Tool, returns Xperia devices to stock

Sony is continuing to build on its pro-developer reputation by releasing its own Flash Tool. This allows users to flash stock ROMs, returning their devices back to factory settings, at any time and from any state. While the tool is limited to those with unlocked bootloaders, Sony is trying to take control over a developer community that has, until now, been using its rather crudely-built (and illegal) ROM flashing tools.

Sony’s Flash Tool goes one step further than the existing one by downloading your phone’s stock ROM from its servers and flashing it to your phone, all in one clean move. Even though it doesn’t facilitate flashing of custom ROMs, the new beta application promises to get ROM users out of trouble should they hit a snag… or two.

Sony has been promising in supporting their consumers, so I’ll try to show MY support!

My next phone will be an Xperia.

This is great, but it’s still only for phones with unlocked bootloaders. People with locked bootloaders still have to find our own way to flash our phones.

Sony has some of the best looking phones out there, so this is a step in the right direction in terms of adoption.

From an honest consumer standpoint, we don’t want Samsung (or anyone for that matter) to have too much of the pie. I imagine this is why Google is pushing LG products with the Nexus 4.

Now all Sony has to do is sell a few phones so those that do buy can use this tool. Good luck with that.

Sony should have just BUILT a Nexus Device and be done with it.
Maybe once the SALES number of the LG made Google Nexus 4 become Public Sony and others might take Notice and rethink there Business strageys.

How about Sony work on not abandon to support their device with in one year before anything else?

Awesome. Sony will make a comeback.

I’d like to see sony make a big comeback. Their walkman phones were some of the best at the time. The w810i, that phone was a beast, I had 3 of them over the years. The w910i was an awesome slider phone too!
