Samsung will launch a quad-core Galaxy S III with LTE support this summer in Korea, making it the first handset of its kind. Current LTE devices are limited to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 chipset, which maxes out at two cores. And despite being extremely fast, the Snapdragon S4 does not match up to Samsung’s own Exynos chipset when it comes to gaming performance. We’re sure that the company has been working on pairing an independent LTE modem with its Exynos silicon, and the work seems to have paid off. A representative stated, ” [it] includes a quad-Core Exynos application processor and an LTE modem chip separately,” which explains the 0.4mm increased thickness.
When the Galaxy S III launches in Canada this week, it will contain 2GB of RAM and a dual-core Snapdragon S4 SoC with an Adreno 225 GPU. As we showed you during our initial tests, there isn’t much performance loss between the dual- and quad-core versions, and to many the inclusion of LTE will offset any hardware speed differences. But when Samsung aims to bring “the best of both worlds” to its home country, chances are there will be a quad-core LTE Galaxy S III Pro released later this year in North America. At least, we can hope it will.
