BlackBerry Torch 9810 launches at WIND

The BlackBerry Torch 9810 didn’t receive much of a design change from the previous 9800 model, but certainly got a slight bump in specs. This 3.2-inch touchscreen QWERTY slider has a 1.2 GHz processor, 5MP camera, runs off BlackBerry OS 7 and has just been released by WIND Mobile. You can have this for $149 on WINDtab+ or $549 no-term.

More here at WIND
(Thanks MJ!)

    • I like Android myself but I wish people would stop blindly sucking Google’s ****. There is a market for Blackberry. Android OS may be better. But Android devices have a much higher failure ratio compared to Blackberry and people like the Blackberry qwertys and BBM. RIM devices are fairly reliable and their phones have good radio antennae (though the Bold 9900 has been experiencing some significant problems. ie. bricking and poor battery life). I have a Nexus S and I wasn’t impressed with Samsung when the screen got burn-in. And I’m not impressed with my HTC’s crappy GPS. You can’t trust reviews anymore before you buy a phone because most of them are written by fanboys. Just like how Engadget slurped off the iPhone 4 despite the antennaegate and “death grip” issue.

    • This is more of a reply to droidacolyte but I find Android fails as much as Blackberry if not less. I used both BB and an Android and I have to say Android owns BB in things it can do and robustness is on par at worst.

You certainly can’t say browser crashing because it couldn’t load the entire website into the memory is hardly better than hiccups Android has?

  3. It was pointed out to me that this has the same specs of the 9900 but with a slider keyboard. I wonder if they’ve improved that keyboard since the 9800?

Oh, the price is $149 Tab+ and $549 regular.

  6. Glad to see they are supporting RIM, probably the carrier with the highest ratio of Blackberry : Non-Blackberry.

    • Phoneguy, a recent report based on 600,000 carrier service calls proved that BlackBerry phones were by far the most reliable smartphones on the market in terms of OS stability and physical integrity.

The worst ranked was Android, wanna know why? It had nothing to do with Samsung or HTC, etc, but sub $200 product. Cheap phones with an OS they’re not properly designed to handle made Android 233% more likely to fail than a BlackBerry.

Wait a second! Doesn’t the sub $200 market include ZTE and UMX?????

Ref: Techvibes, Cellular News (UK), Globe and Mail, National Post, Times of London, etc, etc, etc.

  9. People call it a “battery problem” on the 9900. Yes, it’s a problem considering that now it lasts only 2 days on a single charge instead of 3 like my old 9700. Naughty RIM gave up nearly a whole day of battery life for more sex appeal.

But what the hell do you call IPhone 4S? Or any other phone that requires you to charge before you get home on a work day? “battery norm”? Even the IPhone 4 didn’t last very long before IOS5.

It’s perspective what people would call a problem on a device. What’s “normal” on an IP4 (I know, I’m continually using this example) I call “totally crap”.

  10. Public Mobile are firmly a discount brand. Expensive phones and contracts/tabs are not part of their strategy. And I respect that. I would feel nervous about spending $549 on a CDMA phone that wasn’t from a reliable national carrier like Verizon or Sprint. I would not buy a $549 Public Mobile phone. Too risky of an investment. I think Public Mobile have the right idea.

WIND Mobile have a different model. They target the discount crowd and yes the discount crowd is unlikely to buy a brand new Blackberry or a HTC Amaze. But the more expensive phones are targeted more towards the MobileSyrup/HoFo/RFD crowd. The early adopters/guinea pigs who are willing to put up with network inconveniences and beta test the network. While the mainstream would be more comfortable buying an expensive phone with a proven national network (Rogers, Bell and Telus).

    • If people put as much maturity, common sense and intelligent thought into their comments as you do we would not need moderators on forums. A well argued point that WIND Mobile is for people that aren’t necessarily complacent and need almost complete robustness and are willing to put up with glitches and network coverage in exchange for discounted rates.

  11. Some thoughts on the BlackBerry Torch: the 9810 is my favourite BlackBerry, something i’d highly consider besides high-end Androids if i wasn’t in a contract already. :D

  20. The forward sliders are a rarity in this age, so it’s nice to see more exposure of the 9810.
